Solved Problem.2
NORMAL, OBLIQUE SHOCKS

COMPRESSIBLE
AND EXPANSION WAVES

AERODYNAMIC 1
2. Air flows through a duct. The pressure and temperature at station 1 are P1= 0.7 atm and
T1= 300C respectively. If P2 = 0.5 atm, calculate the temperature and density at station 2. Assume the
flow is isotropic.
Given Data:
P1= 0.7 atm = 0.7 x 1.0133 x 105 N/m2
T1= 300C = 303 k
P2 = 0.5 atm = 0.5 x 1.0133 x 105 N/m2
To Find:
T2 and ρ2
Solution:
ρ1 = P1/RT1 = (0.7 x 1.0133 x 105 ) / (287 x 303) = 0.8157 kg/ m3 = ρ1
(T1/T2) = (P1/P2)γ-1/ γ = (303/T2 ) = (0.7 x 1.0133 x 105 ) / (0.5 x 1.0133 x 105 )γ-1/ γ = 0.098
(303/T2 ) = 0.098
T2 = 275.12 k

2
ρ2 / ρ1 = (T2/T1) 1/ γ-1

= 0.908 (1/0.4)
ρ2 = 0.786 x 0.8157 = 0.641 kg/m3

T2 = 275.12 k
