Engineering Ethics
One Person's Science,
Another Person's Policy
OUTLINE

• Background
• What is EPA and it’s work
• What is problem in this case
• What does the topic about
• Why do we need to concern about the topic
BACKGROUND
The background study of the topic was about a scientist . She was a scientist . And during
her research she found something that was not good for environment and the
environmental protection agency (EPA) concern about her study and ask her to help
rewrite the regularity limits for the chemicals but she denied for the help this is the
scenario
WHAT IS EPA AND IT’S
WORK

• EPA is: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is an independent executive agency of
the United States federal government tasked with environmental protection matters’
• National efforts to reduce environmental risks are based on the best available scientific
information;
• Federal laws protecting human health and the environment are administered and enforced
fairly, effectively and as Congress intended;
• Contaminated lands and toxic sites are cleaned up by potentially responsible parties and
revitalized; and
• Chemicals in the marketplace are reviewed for safety.
WHAT IS PROBLEM IN THIS
CASE

• jekyhldium is used in many industrial process and is known to exists in nature primarily in
two oxidation states
• This problem is about toxicity potential for human exposure to jekyhldium metal during its
oxidation and reduction process.
• The oxidized form is extremely toxic, the reduced form is harmless.
• The agency EPA alarmed by news of possibility of transformation from the less toxic to the
more toxic form.
• And ask Reams to help rewrite the regulatory limits for jekyhldium, soils, water based on her
findings.
• But Reams declined to rewrite regulations even though she was the person to clearly
demonstrate the danger.
THE TOPIC ABOUT

• Ethical point of view of an professional

• About the policy's should follow
• During invention being professional
• And always being ethical
WHY NEED TO BE CONCERNED

• To made a better workplace

• To make a better world
• To make things right
