Reverse Osmosis

Samiha 6G
What is Reverse
Osmosis and is it
safe to drink it ?
 Reverse Osmosis {RO} is a water purification
process that uses a partially permeable
membrane to remove ions, unwanted molecules
and larger particles from drinking water.
 RO removes lead from water and frees people
from many diseases such as high blood
pressure , nerve damage and low fertility.
Drinking {RO} water can also eliminate risks of
brain damage and anemic conditions , especially
in children.
Why and where is Reverse
Osmosis used?
 Reverse Osmosis is used remove many
types of dissolved and suspended
chemical species as well as biological
ones principally bacteria from water.
 It is used in industrial processes and
the production of portable water.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages:
 The process is simple and cheap.
 The membrane can be replaced in 3-4 minutes and
hence can get uninterrupted water supply.
Disadvantages/Limitations:
 The membrane cost is high.
 Membrane should withstand pressure of 20-100 atm.
