Definitions
• Memory / Storage devices –Physical devices used to store
information or data temporarily or permanently

• Primary storage / memory - An inbuilt memory that stores data.


It holds only the data which the computer is currently working on

• Secondary Storage / memory (Auxiliary memory) - The external


memory of computer that stores data outside the computer in
external storage devices

Hard disk

• Invented by IBM in 1956

• Most commonly used form of secondary memory

• Also known as magnetic storage device

• 2 types
• internal hard disk (non portable)
• external hard disk (portable)

• Can store large amount of data up to 8 TB


Floppy Disc / floppy diskette

• Invented by IBM engineers led by Alan


Shugart in 1971

• Were used commonly in the late 20th


century

• Had comparatively smaller storage capacity


(up to 1.44 MB )

• obsolete nowadays
CD (compact disc )

• Invented by James Russel in 1979

• 2 types
• CD-R ( Compact Disc Recordable)
• CD-RW (Compact Disc Rewritable)

• Can be read using a CD ROM drive

• can store up to 700 MB of data


DVD ( Digital Versatile Disc)

• Invented in 1995

• Several types
• DVD-R
• DVD-RW
• DVD-RAM
• DVD-ROM

• Larger storage capacity (upto 4.7 GB)

• Can be read using DVD drive or DVD player


Blu Ray disc

• Invented in 2002

• larger storage capacity then a CD or DVD


(upto 25 GB-single side; 50 GB-double
side)

• Can be read using Blu ray drive or Blu ray


disc player
USB (universal serial bus )

• Invented by Dov Moran, M-Systems in 2000

• Also called pen drives or flash memory sticks

• small in size

• can store data from 2 GB-16 GB
