The 1970 Bhola cyclone was a devastating tropical cyclone that struck East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) killing up to 500,000 people, making it the deadliest tropical cyclone on record. While the Indian government received early warnings about the storm from ships in the Bay of Bengal, this information was not passed to Pakistan due to hostile relations between the two countries. Pakistan was only notified when U.S. satellites detected the storm, limiting their ability to prepare for the deadly cyclone.

It was the deadliest tropical cyclone ever recorded, and one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern times. Up to 500,000 people lost their lives in the storm. Lack of preparation after early detection The Indian government received many ship reports from the Bay of Bengal that were giving meteorological information on the cyclone, but as Indo-Pakistan relations were generally hostile, the information was not passed to the Pakistan government. On November 11, 1970 the U.S officials notified the Indian and West Pakistan authorities after it’s weather satellites spotted a storm of at least category 1 intensity tracking up the Bay of Bengal. November 12, 1970, the Pakistan Meteorological Department did issue a report calling for "danger preparedness" in the coastal regions.
