CONCEPT OF STYLE
• Joos (1967: 50) stated that speaking is very formal or very informal choice are being governed by
circumstance. It can be concluded that conversation can determine the situation with whom they talk
and adapt where the place is.
• According to Coupland (2007), style refers to ways of speaking – how speakers use the resource of
language variation to make meaning in social encounters.

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

This study will be analyzed by using Martin Joos’s theory as the main
theory for language style and Roman Jakobson’s theory as the
supporting theory for the function of language.
1. MAIN THEORY

According to Martin Joss (1967:153), there are five types of language styles:
• Frozen style
• Formal style
• Consultative style
• Casual style
• Intimate style
2. SUPPORTING THEORY

Jakobson (1960) argued that language always has a poetic function, linguistics must account for it,
and that it could and should therefore account for poetry and other artistic forms as well. In his
theory, the functions of language has five parts, there are:
• Referential Function (the cognitive ordering of propositional meaning)
• Emotive function (affective and expressive meaning)
• Conative function (organizing meaning relative to an addressee)
• Metalingual function (language ‘glossing’ or referring to itself)
• Phatic function (language marking that people are in social contact)
