DIGITAL ELECTRONICS

TITLE : TO DESIGN THE 8:1 MUX USING TWO 4:1

MUX
MULTIPLEXERS
 IN ELECTRONICS, A MULTIPLEXER (OR MUX) IS A DEVICE THAT
SELECTS ONE OF SEVERAL ANALOG OR DIGITAL INPUT SIGNALS AND
FORWARDS THE SELECTED INPUT INTO A SINGLE LINE.

 A MULTIPLEXER OF 2N INPUTS HAS N SELECT LINES, WHICH ARE USED

TO SELECT WHICH INPUT LINE TO SEND TO THE OUTPUT.

 MULTIPLEXERS ARE MAINLY USED TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF DATA

THAT CAN BE SENT OVER THE NETWORK WITHIN A CERTAIN AMOUNT
OF TIME AND BANDWIDTH.
 A multiplexer is also called a data selector.

 Multiplexers can also be used to implement Boolean functions of multiple

variables.

 An electronic multiplexer makes it possible for several signals to share one device
or resource, for example one A/D converter or one communication line, instead of
having one device per input signal.

 Conversely, a demultiplexer (or demux) is a device taking a single input signal

and selecting one of many data-output-lines, which is connected to the single
input. A multiplexer is often used with a complementary demultiplexer on the
receiving end.
Schematic of a 2-to-1 Multiplexer. It can be
equated to a controlled switch.
Schematic of a 1-to-2 Demultiplexer. Like a
multiplexer, it can be equated to a controlled
switch.
4:1 MULTIPLEXER
A  4-to-1 multiplexer consists four data input lines as D0 to D3, two select lines as S0 and S1
and a single output line Y. The select lines S1 and S2 select one of the four input lines to connect
the output line. The particular input combination on select lines selects one of input (D0 through
D3) to the output.
TRUTH TABLE OF 4:1 MULTIPLEXER

From the truth table, we can write the output expressions as

If S1=0 and S0=0 then Y = D0

Therefore, Y = D0 (S1) ̅ (S0) ̅

If S1= 0 and S0=1, the Y = D1

Therefore, Y = D1 (S1) ̅ S0
If S1=1 and S0=0, then Y = D2
Therefore, Y = D2 S1 (S0) ̅
If S1=1 and S0=1 the Y = D3
Therefore, Y = D3 S1 S0

8:1 multiplexer

 An 8-to-1 multiplexer consists of eight data inputs D0 through D7, three input
select lines S2 through S0 and a single output line Y. Depending on the select
lines combinations, multiplexer decodes the inputs.
Truth table

From truth table, the Boolean equation for the output is given
as
Inside of 8:1multiplexer
Making of 8:1 from two 4:1 multiplexer

 In order to construct 8:1 multiplexer from two 4:1 multiplexer, selectors of both 4:1
multiplexer are connected in parallel.
 And output of both 4:1 multiplexer are connected to or gate. So that final output can
be obtained.
 Now enable of 4:1multiplexer should be given Not gate so that when one 4:1
multiplexer is operating other should be inactive.
 And at the same time when other is not operating latter should be operating
Apparatus required:

 Prototyping board
 Dc power supply
 Light emitting diode
 Digital Ics : 74153 : dual 4:1 MUX

Circuit
Procedure

 Collect the components necessary to accomplish this experiment.

 Plug the Ic chip into the breadboard.
 Connect the supply voltage and ground lines to the chips. PIN7 = ground and
PIN14 = +5v
 Make connections as shown in the respective circuit diagram
 Connect the input of the gate to the input switches of the LED
 Connect the output of the gate to the output LEDs
 Once all connections have been done, turn on the power of the breadboard
 Operate the switches and fill in the truth table
Conclusion

 The truth table of 8:1 MUX using Ic 74153 has been verified
