8 Parts of Speech

Noun Pronoun Verb Adjective Adverb Preposition Conjunction Interjection


Noun
 Name of a person, place, thing or idea etc.
 Proper Nouns refer to particular places,
persons, things, ideas etc.
 Ex. Noun Proper Noun
Person Girl Dorothy
Place City Kansas
Thing Dog Toto
Pronoun
 Takes the place of a noun
 3 kinds - subjective, objective and
possessive
 Ex.
– She is Adora, his twin sister.
– They both have swords.
– Battle Cat and Spirit belong to them.
Verb
 Shows the action or
state of being and it
also indicates the time
of the action or being
 Ex.
– Popeye married Olive
Oyl.
– Spinach makes Popeye
strong.
– You will like it too.
Adjective
 Words that describe nouns
and specify size, color,
number and the like.
 Ex.
– Sneezy has a big, red, bulbous
nose.
– The seven dwarfs lived in a
small stone house.
Adverbs
 Words that describe verbs,
adjectives and other adverbs.
 Ex.
– Astro barked loudly at the other
cars that quickly passed by.
– Rosie, our robot, cleans the house
rapidly.
– Unfortunately, we are having Mr.
Spacely over for dinner tomorrow.
Prepositions
 Show how a noun and
pronoun is related to
another word in a
sentence
 Ex.
– Ariel lived under the sea,
beneath the surface.
– She longed to be near
Prince Eric and stand on
her own two feet.
Conjunctions
 Join words, phrases or clauses.
 Coordinating Conjunctions
– and, but, for, or, nor, either, neither, yet, so, and so
that.
– Ex. Alvin and the Chipmunks went to the Park.
 Subordinating Conjunctions
– although, because, since, until, while
– Ex. They were hungry because they didn’t bring
money.
Interjection
 An addition to a
sentence to call
attention show feeling,
hesitation etc.
 Ex.
– Ouch! That hurt!
– D’oh! Bart put down that
bat!

Part Of Speech Definition Example Words Example Sentences
Noun Person, Place, Thing cat, Odie, TV This is my cat, Garfield.

Pronoun Replaces a noun I, you, he, she, it He loves lasagna.

Verb Action or state has, sleeps, sing He sleeps all day.
