PREQUISTS
• Let us understand the what is Additive manufacturing first.

• Additive Manufacturing(AM) is a layer-based automated fabrication process for

making scaled 3-dimensional physical objects directly from 3D-CAD data without using
part-depending tools.

• This latest technology is found to be having various advantages when compared to the
traditional ones.

• 2-D LAYERS 3-D OBJECT. So it can also be called as a 2.5-D

LAYER BASED TECHNOLOGY.

PROCESSES
BENEFITS OF ADDITIVE
MANUFACTURING
• Mass Customization and Personalization
• Accelerated Time-to-Market
• Almost zero waste generated
• Assistance with Prototyping
• As the complexity of the product increases the cost almost remains
the same
• Lower Energy Costs
• Now we are finally satisfied and we can accept that additive manufacturing
is a layer based technology.

• In the definition of AM, carefully observe that there were few words
mentioned “3-dimensional physical objects directly from 3D-CAD data
without using part-depending tools”.

• All the information of the product were in the CAD model. That we means
we have already analyzed the product thoroughly and since AM is a layer
based technology we need have an information on the layers also like the
basic dimensions and the characteristics.

• SO HOW DO WE MAKE THOSE LAYERS AND STUDY ABOUT IT??

WE SLICE THE
MODEL INTO THE
REQUIRED NUMBER
OF LAYERS!!
ADATIVE SLICING
• Adaptive slicing is an important computational task required in the layer-based
manufacturing process.
• Its purpose is to find an optimal trade-o between the fabrication time (number of
layers) and the surface quality (geometric deviation error).
• Most of the traditional adaptive slicing algorithms are computationally expensive
or only based on local evaluation of errors.
