Networking Fundamental Net 207
Final Project

Introduction
•A local-area network (LAN) like the project design is a
computer network that spans a relatively small area. Most often,
a LAN is confined to a single room, building or group of
buildings, however, one LAN used in this project is with in a
building.
•We use wired connections to link the computers to each other
and to a variety of peripheral devices such as printers. Devices
connected to a LAN are able to access data from any machine
that's connected to the network depending on the administrative
rules. LAN users can communicate with each other by chat or
mail.
Objective
•The objective of the project is to link computers together
and provide shared access to printers, file servers, and
other services. The network is connected into larger
networks, such as connecting many computers within the
company to each other and to the Internet.
Problem Specification
By directive, we are told to design a company network with the
following specification:
• 80 employees;
• All employee have a computer;
• There are four departments
• with in all departments, employees should be able to access the
internet
• Laser Printer is made available to every department, and every
employee can print.
Working Schedule
Network Design
Design Specification
This section deals with devices use in implementing the project. This
section also explain the function of those devices.

•A switch is a central point to which several devices connect, to facilitate

communication between them. Switches have intelligence and know the MAC
address (physical hardware identifier) and passes on data to only the computer for
which it is intended. This increases the speed of the entire network due to less
congestion.
•Routers extend networks by passing packets between logical networks. They are
usually used in networks that use TCP/IP and dedicated lines. They use logical
addresses (in this case, IP addresses) to move data to its destination. They rout
packets and filter, when set up to do so.
•Gateways connect networks that use different protocols. The default gateway is
used to route packets to remote networks. Without a gateway, the local network is
the limit for communication. To go between protocols, the gateway will accept the
data and repackage it using the destination’s protocol. A gateway also connects
home networks with the internet. Because of this, it is wise to have it configured to
be secure, in order to prevent unwanted outside traffic from accessing private data
inside the network.
•Etc.
TESTING
It is always important to test your network after doing your connection.
Things to look at:

• Quality of Service (QoS): applying a QoS configuration to your network is not

an easy task. There are so many dependencies and little things that could go
wrong, so testing is extremely important to verify that, in the end, the network
is classifying, marking, and queuing your traffic as designed.

• Check if each client can connect to the servers and use the
services provided by the server
• Check if the network speed is acceptable
• Check if the backup server can successfully backup the data and
restore the data
• We should first use cable tester to test each cable and ensure that
every cable is connectable and no broken inside.
Conclusion
•The project is a collection of devices connected
together in one physical location, such as a building
of offices. However, a LAN can be small or large,
ranging from a home network with one user to an
enterprise network with thousands of users and
devices in an office or entity, but for the sake of the
project, we have limited it to 80 employees
