Execution

(The gap nobody knows)

❏ WHAT IS EXECUTION ?
➔ It is the ability to turn what we know into what we do.
➔ It bridges the gap between expectations and results
➔ It provides us clear Input, Processes and Output
➔ If you don't know how to execute, the whole of your effort as a leader will always be less than
the sum of its parts.
➔ Strategies most often fails not because they are worthless but because they are not executed
well.

❏ DELL VS COMPAQ- Execution made the difference

● Even though Compaq had a brilliant strategy it failed because it was not executed well. The
leaders could not figure out the strategy that could lead them towards their goals
● While on other hand DELL could identify the accurate strategy of direct sales and build to
order approach whilst keeping a sharp eye on costs helped it in surpassing Compaq as the
biggest seller of PC’s in 2001.
WHAT LEADS TO FAILURE OF STRATEGIES?

Strategies fails because of the gap between what a company's leaders want to achieve and the ability of
their organization to achieve it and that is The gap nobody knows.

EXECUTION COMES OF AGE:

It is not a one day process. People might say that they know about that even though they might not have
the slightest idea about what it means to execute.

To understand execution, you have to keep three key points in mind:

❖ Execution is a discipline:
➔ It is not tactics
➔ Fundamental to strategy-strategy in par with the ability to execute
➔ rigorously discussing hows and whats
➔ questioning, tenaciously following through, and ensuring accountability.
➔ exposing reality and acting on it
➔ three core processes: the people process, the strategy process, and the operations process.
❖ Execution Is the Job of the Business Leader:
➔ The leader is not exempted
➔ requires a comprehensive understanding of a business, its people, and its environment.
➔ The leader must be in charge of getting things done by running the three core processes—picking
other leaders, setting the strategic direction, and conducting operations.
❖ Execution Has to Be in the Culture:
➔ Execution has to be embedded in the reward systems and in the norms of behavior that everyone
practices.
➔ Everyone in the organization must understand and practice the discipline.
➔ Execution has to be part of an organization's culture, driving the behavior of all leaders at all levels.
➔ Employing six sigma technique DMAIC- SIX SIGMA( tools to improve the capability of their business
processes.)

WHY IS THE CONCEPT OF EXECUTION IGNORED?

❏ It is not considered valuable

❏ requires intense focus and incisive thinking.
❏ The inability to question why certain things happen
❏ Requires persistent and constructive probing.

“ Leadership without the discipline of execution is

incomplete and ineffective. Without the ability to
execute, all other attributes of leadership become
hollow.” -Larry Bossidy
