What is XR
XR is the umbrella term encapsulating Augmented
Reality(AR), Virtual Reality(VR) and Mixed
Reality(MR), and anything and everything related to
it. While AR and VR offer a wide range of
revolutionary experiences, the same underlying
technologies are powering XR.
Traditional Teaching Methods
Traditional education involves the transmit of skills,
facts, and standards of moral and social conduct
including rote learning and memorization where
teachers are the instruments by which this knowledge
is communicated.
Technology in Education
The engagement of technology in Education provides
different means to boost students learning and integration
in lectures. Technology in the field of education can
influence students to learn actively and can motivate them,
leading to an effective process of learning
Technology in Education

Virtual and Augmented reality are such technologies, and

they’re making inroads into most aspects of education. From
high-level education to basic video tutorials, XR are rapidly
becoming a very important aspect of how we learn.

The applications of XR in the field of education are too legion to

list. The possibilities and potentials are extensive, and new firms
are dipping their hand into the water ostensibly every day.
VR- What can it offer in Education

Virtual Reality (VR) is an absorbing, interactive complete

immersion experience that shuts out the physical world and
opens its gate to a new computer captured or computer
designed graphical world.

•Engaging & immersive experiences

VR delivers experiences and interactions for students that are
either not practical or not possible in the ‘real world’.
VR- What can it offer in Education
•Increased knowledge absorption
It can help students feel submerged in an experience, tightening
their imagination and creating a thought in ways not possible
with traditional books and images

Popular VR devices : HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or Google Cardboard

AR- What can it offer in Education

Augmented Reality (AR) brings a better scenario

of reality created by the use of technology to up-bring graphical
information on an image of something that can be viewed using
a device (such as a mobile phone camera).

•Seamless combination of virtual and real world

Augmented Reality supports seamless interaction between real
and virtual environments and allows the use of a tangible
interface metaphor for object manipulation.
AR- What can it offer in Education
•Object modelling
AR can help earn a better knowledge of any lesson. AR
applications for medical students can help them to learn human
anatomy and understand other relevant fields more deeply.
Implementation of AR and VR
Several firms are investing into XR in the field of
Education
• NearPod- offers a super-low cost VR headset solution
• EON Reality-provide the tools for educators to create their
own applications.
• Google for Education (ClassVR)- offers fully classroom ready
AR and VR devices
Downsides of XR in Education
Taking about the complete incorporation of AR and VR tech in
education, we are still miles away from that integration. Here
are a few downsides of AR and VR in education.

 Deteriorates human connections

 Lack of flexibility
 Functionality issues
 Delivering lessons across curriculum
 Quite expensive
Conclusion
The XR environment opens new opportunities by
bringing new functions, information and
knowledge.

By overcoming some hurdles, it can definitely

reach a new level and would start being
implemented in every aspect and thus start
showing its real potentials.
