Bread of salt

WHAT IS PANDESAL?
WHAT IS PANDESAL?

- (Spanish: pan de sal, literally "salt bread")

-most popular bread in the Philippines(poor
man’s diet)
-Dome shaped and yeast based bread
 Step 1
 Mix ingredients
 You need to first do the starter mix in a bowl a tablespoon of
yeast, a tablespoon of sugar and 1/2 cup of warm not hot water
and 1/4 cup of flour. Mix it all together with a wooden spoon . Do
not use a metal spoon or fork. The water temperature has to be
warm so that it helps activate the yeast. If you get it too hot or
cold it will not activate the yeast.
 Step 2
 You will see the yeast start to activate when you see the bubbles
form. This will take about 5 minutes.
 Step 3
 With another bowl measure in a 1 tablespoon of soften butter a
cup of sugar, one cup of warm milk and teaspoon of salt, six cups
of flour, one cup of sugar and separate five eggs so you will put in
only the yolks. It needs to be done in a specific way, flour, sugar,
salt, egg yolks, margarine, and then milk. After it is mixed up you
can add the starter mixture. Knead it well until smooth and put in
a oil lined bowl. Put a paper towel over the top and let it rise for
an hour.
 Step 4
 After it has risen then knead and shape it into a dome
shape. Using a strainer, sprinkle the bread crumbs in a
plate. Sprinkle some flour on the surface so you can
work better. Separate the dough into small shaped
portions it should be dusted with flour. Now you are
ready to put the dough into baking pans that have been
lightly oiled. You will need to let the dough rise again
for another 35 minutes, maybe a little longer is your
kitchen temperature is cool. Preheat our over to 350°.
 Step 5
 Bake for about 15 minutes until the top is golden
brown. Time is not exact as each oven cooks differently
and each dough shape maybe different sizes.

Primary symbolisms
 Pandesal- may symbolize the character and
personality of the boy or the reality that he has
to face.
-pandesal is “quite commonplace”
-during the process of making pandesal, it is
necessary to let the yeast rise, like the pandesal,
the boy wishes to feel upliftment or hope at
least on the inside
- It represents the boy’s not being ready for the
real world
 Egg yolk things- the boy’s desire for the rich
life with Aida which he later relinquished and
embraced his reality
“In a silver bowl... I discovered, that appeared like whole egg yolks
that had been dipped in honey and peppermint.
“I allowed my covetousness to have its sway and not only stuffed my
mouth with this and that confection but also wrapped up a
quantity of those egg-yolk things in several sheets of napkin
paper. None of my companions had thought of doing the same,
and it was with some pride that I slipped the packet under my
shirt. There, I knew, it would not bulge.

“With the napkin balled up in my hand, I

flung out my arm to scatter the egg-yolk
things in the dark.”
