Simple past tense

• Simple past tense is used principally to describe


events in the past, although it also has some other
uses. Simple past is in –ed however there are few
hundred irregular verbs in the different form.
• Example :
• Regular verb : work – worked
live – lived
• Irregular verb : be – was/were
meet – met
know - knew
Kinds of simple past tense
• 1. verbal (using verb)
• Formation :
positive = I/you/she/he/it/we/they helped
negative = I/you/she/he/it/we/they did not
help
interrogative = Did I/you/she/he/it/we/they help?
• Notes: Did for all subjects in the negative and
interrogative form.
- using adverb of time, manner and place
Exampe: (+) I helped Sarah yesterday.
(-) I didn’t help Sarah yesterday.
(?) Did I help Sarah yesterday?
• 2. nominal (using tobe)
• Formation:
positive = s + was/were + O +C
negative = s + was/were + not + O +C
interrogative = was/were + s + O +C ?
Example :
(+) She was sad last week.
(-) She wasn’t sad last week.
(?) Was she sad last week?

Notes :
Was : S ( I, She, He, It)
Were : S (You, They, We)
Adverbs
• A. Adverb of time
1. When something happened:
- Yesterday, later, tomorrow, in 1978, during
the night etc.
2. For how long:
- All day, since 2004, from July until August etc
3. How often (frequency)
- Usually, sometimes, etc
• We often use a noun phrase as a time adverb:

yesterday Last One Last

• B. Adverb of Manner
Function Adverb of manner are used to tell us he way or
how something is done.
Formation Adjective + (-ly) e.g. softly, beautifully, terribly,
etc
Example in She plays piano beautifully.
sentence She plays piano softly.
She plays piano terribly.

Position in • Adverb of manner are usually placed after the


sentence main verb or after the object (e.g. “He left the
room quickly.”)
• It can also be used before the verb(e.g. “He
quickly left the room.”)

• Tell us where something
happens.
• Usually placed after the
main verb or after the
object.

- I’m going home, out, back
- Come here (toward me).
- Come in
