LOGGING WHILE DRILLING

 a technique of conveying well logging tools into the well

borehole downhole as part of the bottom hole
assembly (BHA).
 LWD allow wireline-type information to be available as
near as real-time as possible
 Major drawbacks of wireline information is that it is
received several hours to several weeks after the
borehole is drilled.
 Formation can undergo significant alteration, especially
in its fluid saturation, effective porosity, and relative
perm.
-quantifying shaliness
-well-to-well correlation
Gamma -depth correlation between open- and cased-hole logs
Ray -correlation between logging runs.

-identify where hydrocarbons are located in your reservoir

-resistivity + porosity measurements
Resistivity
-estimating water/oil saturation
-evaluating the producibilty of the formation.

Measurement Density -helping the petrophysicist to determine the porosity of the rock
available in and to estimate total reserves.

LWD
technology: Neutron -Through sensitivity to hydrogen in the formation, these tools
can provide the formation fluid-filled porosity.
-provide high-quality acoustic data
Measurement Sonic -correlate seismic time-versus-depth measurements
available in (fairly recent) -determine porosity by understand the mechanical state of the rock

LWD
-produce real-time compressional and shear wave measurements

technology: Formation
pressure -to predict pore pressure trends throughout the wellbore

Formation
fluid sampler -to collect samples while drilling
Borehole
caliper
• Ultra sonic
azimuthal caliper
• Density caliper
-accurate measurements in a wide range
-provide less sensitive to drilling noise with wider frequency response.
