Is the “aggregate of non-


governmental organizations and
institutions that manifest interests and
will of citizens”.
It includes the family and private
sphere, referred to as the “third
sector” of society, distinct from
government and business.
Roles of Civil Society
Enhance transparency and good
governance in developing countries
by contributing to increase public
debate on issues surrounding the
formulation and implementation of
government budgets as well as in
supporting greater transparency of
public revenues.

Advocates the public rights and
wishes of the people, including but
not limited to health, environment
and economic rights.
Fulfils important duties of checks
and balances in democracies, they are
able to influence the government and
hold it.

Alternative Social Movements- it


seeks limited social change. They
target a small group of people and a
specific behaviour and attempt to
change that behaviour in relation to
the issue.

Redemptive Social Movements- is one
that seeks total personal transformation
and is typically religious in nature.
They want to create more dramatic
change
Their goal is to completely change the
individual’s life
A society that creates repentance for
what it perceives as earlier mistakes

Reformative Social
Movements- a social
movement that seeks only to
change some specific aspects
of how society functions.

Revolutionary Social Movement-


is dedicated to carry out
revolution. A social movement
that advance exclusive competing
claims to control of the state or
some segment of it.
