ïAirbags are able to save the passengers
from any serious injuries when crash
occurs.
ïThe attraction of a soft pillow to land
against in a crash must be very strong.
ïAirbags have been under development
for many years.
ïStatistics reveal that airbags reduce the
risk of casualty in a DFC by 30%.
ïNewtonƞs second law of motion.
ïIf objects arenƞt restrained they will
continue moving at the speed of the
moving car even if the car is stopped by
a collision.
ïWhat all airbags need to do is to slow
down the passengers speed to zero.
O
ïThe first patent on an inflatable crash
landing device for airplanes was filed
during WORLD WAR-2
ïIn 1980 first commercial airbags
appeared in automobiles.
ïEver since 1988 it became a binding.
ïEfforts to adapt the airbag was
stranded due to prohibitive prices and
technical hurdles.

ïIs made up of a thin nylon fabric, which is

folded into the steering wheel or dashboard
or the seat or door.

ïThe powdery substance released

(cornstarch or talcum powder) is used to
keep the bags lubricated while theyƞre in
storage.

ï A device that tells the bag to inflate.

ï It works with the control module to
discriminate between crash and non- crash
events.
ï Inflation happens when there is a collision
force equal to running into a brick wall at 16
to 24 Km per hour.

ïNaN3+KNO3=large amts. of NITROGEN

GAS.
ïHot Blasts of the nitrogen inflate the
airbag from its storage site up to
322 Kmph.

ïAirbag are assemblies consisting of

the airbag (made of Nylon), inflator
modules, sensor housing, electrical
connectors (Clock spring), airbag
retainer and the cover.
Inflator assembly
ïControl module activates airbag
assembly- electric current is sent to the
detonator-ignition of sodium azide
pallets-evolves nitrogen gas.
` w
ï Air bags are designed to inflate in frontal
impacts in which the car strikes about 16 km/hr
ïAfter collision sensors sends an electric current
to igniter system
ïElectric current heats the filament which ignites
the capsule which in turn ignites the gas
generating pallets
ïThe gas expands quickly and inflation of air bags
there by takes place, which break through a
plastic cover in the steering wheel
ïTime taken for all these things about 0.1 sec.

ïCurtain airbags
 Developed by mercedes and volvo
Inflate infront of windows to provide
passengers better head and neck
protection
More efficient at tipping and side impacts
 Reduce HIC by 80%
Contd..

ïHead-thorax bag
 Developed by ford and renault.
 High protection to head.

ï
Worlds first airbag for head protection

 Developed by BMW.

ïSmart systems
 Includes weight sensors
 Determine type occupant in seat.
i.e. child or adult.
ïInfrared occupant detection
Detect the distance of passenger from
airbags
Contd..
ïCapacitive reflective occupant
sensing
 Identify distance passenger from dash
board
 Discriminate between human occupant
and inanimate objects
ïUpdated sensor
 Deploys seatbelt pretensioners faster to
get benefit of airbags

ï Airbag inflation
ï Coming to rest in seat and deflation of
airbag
ï All these take in 30 milliseconds

ï In fact the entire inflation/deflation

cycle takes less than ½ sec.
wÕ
ïWhen we turn key look at the dash to
find airbag light for 7-10 sec & then go
out
ïProblems occur when
 Light does not come on
If light does not go off after period
 If light comes during driving
Air bag warning labels
(on visor and other locations)

 Disconnect battery
 Wait 30sec.

 Remove airbag fuse

 Drop sound insulator panel

 Disconnect the circuits

 Thus the bag is disarmed

Keep the bag below 130degree Celsius

What will they think of next?

Pedestrian Protection with air bags?

Not just for carsƦ!

ïAir bags are of greater importance in

today's vehicles since safety of human
life is of prior importance
ïSo far safe riding and for saving the
precious life the safety bags must be
implemented
ïLetƞs hope every automobile
manufacturer implements the same
