Safety
In This Lesson:
1. Fire safety
2. Fire Extinguishers
3. Safety signage
4. Safety symbols
5. Safety terms
6. Safety colors
7. Safety floor striping
8. Universal Signage (Placards)
Flammables Cabinet
• We have a flammables
storage cabinet to store
flammable liquids & gases.
• If the room is on fire it keeps
the contents from catching fire
for hour or even 2 hrs.
• WE NEED TO KEEP THE
DOOR CLOSED! The fire
cabinet doesn’t work, it
doesn’t do anything other
than act as a shelf, if the
doors are left open.
Flammables Trash Can
• We have a flammables trash
can for rags with oils &
solvents on them.
• Oily rags can SELF IGNITE
& are very flammable!
• We empty the can every
night.
• If your in a situation where
you don’t have a can such
as this, put rags in a
can/bucket of water.
Fire Safety
• You can use a fire
extinguisher to stop a
small fire.
• There are many types
of fire.
• There are many types
of extinguishers.
• Using the wrong type
of fire extinguisher
could be disastrous.
Examples of BAD!
• Water on a grease
fire, this fire fighter
just used that cup on
a stick to dump water
on a grease fire in
order to demonstrate what happens!
• Water on a fire that involves electronics,
likely won’t put it out the fire, & may
shock, injure, &/or possibly kill someone.
There are Many Types of Fire
These are just the important few we are going to discuss.

• Class A - Ordinary combustibles:

paper, fabric, cardboard, wood, & etc.
• Class B - Flammable Liquids such as
grease, paint, gasoline, & etc.
• Class C - Electrical device on fire
• Class D - Flammable metals
• Class K - Kitchen combustibles: fats,
grease, & vegetable oils.
There are other Types of Fires, but
we are going to talk about this list.
There are Many Types of Fire Extinguishers
• In B103 we
have 2 ABC
Dry Chemical
Powder Fire
Extinguishers
• 2 Fire Alarm
Pulls.
• & we have 1
Fire Blanket
Using a Fire Extinguisher
Fire Blankets
• We have a Fire
Blanket in class
• Can be used to
smother a fire.
• The most
appropriate
thing to use on
a person with
clothes on fire!
Using a Fire Blanket
• Baking soda works Some
on grease fires.
• Many home owners Important FYI
insurances give
discounts for
having: fire
extinguishers,
smoke alarms, &
etc.
• Mine did! I had to
purchase fire
extinguisher, smoke • The discount paid for
alarm, & carbon them in like 2-3 years,
monoxide detector. so that’s cool…
9 Volt
Batteries
• 9-Volt batteries
can be found in
just about every
home & they can
be a fire hazard!
• They are
powerful enough
to start a fire.
• Always store &
dispose of them
properly!!!
Exits
• We have 3 Exits
from B103.
• One door leads
directly to the outside of the building.
• One door leads into the classroom
next door.
• One leads out into the hallways, &
directly across that hallway is an
exterior exit door.
Safety Colors
• RED – Fire
• GREEN –
Safety (First
Aid)
• BLUE – (Out
of Order)
Safety Colors
• RED = Fire
• Note: the fire extinguisher is
red, but the safety inspection
tag on the fire extinguisher it

use, tool &/or
equipment is locked
out of use for safety!
Floor Safety Stripes

• Yellow & Black – Show areas where

only trained operators are allowed &
PPE must be worn in these areas!

in the way that
cannot be
moved.

you can safely
walk &/or find
safety
equipment &
first aid in these
areas.
Red
• Red = Fire
equipment area

things could
go wrong!
Hazard Alert Message Important

&/or etc. but
you’ll likely
live…

a hazardous
situation which
could cause a
severe injury &
it might even
possibly kill
you!
Hazard Alert Message Danger

to cause a
very severe
injury & it

will cause If you come into contact with a live
high voltage power line you are
your most likely to die. Even if you live,
DEATH!!! you will have almost certainly
sustained very severe injuries!
Universal Safety Signage

• Why would we need to do this?

1.A large percentage of world is
not literate.
Universal Safety Signage
2. Even if an individual is literate, in
which language should we put
the warning in?
3. People need to know what
dangers they are dealing with.
4. First responders, & especially
fire fighters, really need to know
what they are charging into in an
emergency. So…
So, we use universal
Safety Signage & Placards
(Hazmat) is short for Hazardous Materials
DOT Hazmat Placards • Tells everyone, but in
particular it informs
first responders (Like
Firefighters) what
they are dealing with!
• Have you seen these
placards on Public
Buildings, Trucks,
Trains, & etc.?
• Department of
Transportation (DOT)
requires them.
Universal Safety Symbols
• You will see these on
boxes & shipping
containers worldwide.
