INTRODUCTION
Ghana is a sub-saharan African country (shown in Figure 1) with a land
surface area of 239,460km, a population of 24.66 million (Ghana

Statistical Service, 2010) and a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of GHS

73,101.9 million (Ghana Statistical Service (2013)).

Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) is the technology, policies, standards,

human resources, and related activities necessary to acquire, process,
distribute, use, maintain, and preserve spatial data.
As a focal point for my country, I identified land information availability
as a priority and provided an opportunity for a more coherent
framework on environmental and resource management information
and decided to setup the Ghana Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI).
Below is the vision, mission, goals and objectives for the GSDI.

Availability of current and accurate

geospatial data at local, regional and
national levels for sustained
economic growth by the GSDI.

MISSION STATEMENT
www.wascal.org

To support stakeholders in meeting

their goals and objectives by
providing them with reliable and
interoperable geospatial data of the
GSDI.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
www.wascal.org

GOAL ONE
Enable the access, sharing and use
geographic data across agencies.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
www.wascal.org

OBJECTIVE ONE OF GOAL ONE

The GSDI Secretariat together with stakeholders
(Policy maker, Producer, Provider, Broker, Value-Added
Reseller and End User) will enable the access, sharing
and use geographic data across agencies (Survey
Department, Lands Commission, Soil Research
Institute, Meteorological Services Department,
CERSGIS, EPA, Department of Feeder Roads) by 2021.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
www.wascal.org

OBJECTIVE TWO OF GOAL ONE

The GSDI Secretariat will reduce the duplication of

effort among agencies (Survey Department, Lands
Commission, Soil Research Institute, Meteorological
Services Department, CERSGIS, EPA, Department of
Feeder Roads) collecting spatial data by 2021.

OBJECTIVE THREE OF GOAL ONE

The GSDI Secretariat together with stakeholders will

collect and make geographic data more accessible to
agencies (Survey Department, Lands Commission,
Soil Research Institute, Meteorological Services
Department, CERSGIS, EPA, Department of Feeder
Roads) by 2021.
