What are Sig Figs?
 Number with or without decimal places can be rounded

depending on the level of accuracy required.

 Due to the experimental nature of science and engineering, not

all digits in all numbers are considered “significant” (sig.figs).

In such cases, we round the number off to the required
significant figures.
Steps to rounding number to the
correct decimal places
 Locate the digit in the required decimal places (known as the critical digit)

 Round down if the next digit is less than 4, round up if the next digit is 5 or

more
 Round each of these to two decimal places:

adding and subtracting.
