What is the scope of Sociolinguistics ?

◦ Sociolinguistics is the study of language and how it is affected by


the social setting in which language is used.
◦ Language and Society intersect.
◦ Study of Psychology and Anthropology.
◦ The interplay of society and language.
◦ Language is affected by the cultural setting in which it is used.
◦ Study of dialects, or the regional or ethnic variety of language.
◦ Pronunciations also vary in other regions, as do vocabulary and
grammatical constructions.
◦ Contact of languages with one another.
◦ Sociolinguistics is, indeed, an interesting examination of how
language and various aspects of society interrelate.
◦ Sociolinguists would study would include those such as; Why and
how do we speak differently to certain groups.
◦ What signals do we show or interpret to determine how we speak.
◦ Determine who says what to whom, when, where, how, and why.
◦ In Sociolinguistics language is studies on three level ;
1. Structural
2. Functional
3. Social
