CIRCULAR
FUCTIONS
Objectives:

• illustrate the different circular functions

• illustrate the unit circle and the relationship between the
linear and angular measures of a central angle in a unit
circle
• use reference angles to find exact values of circular
functions
Trigonometric Values of Special Angles
TRIGONOMETRIC RATIOS

There are six trigonometric ratios.

sine, cosine, tangent, cosecant, secant and cot
angent.
These six trigonometric ratios are abbreviated as
sin, cos, tan, csc, sec, cot.

 Example 1
Find the exact values of the six circular functions of the
quadrantal angle

Solution:
 Step 1 Locate on the unit circle and identify the coordinates of its terminal point.


Step 2 Use the definition of the six circular functions of

Example 2
Find the exact values of the six circular functions of the
quadrantal angle

Solution:

Step  1
 Locate on the unit circle and identify the coordinates of its terminal point.

Step 2 Use the definition of the six circular functions of

Find the exact value of

 Solution:
Step 1 Convert to degree measure.


Step 2 Determine the quadrant where the terminal side of the given angle lies.
Observe that or is located in Quadrant III.
Therefore, the x and y coordinates are both negative.
Step 3 Find the reference angle of or 225

Step 1 Convert to degree measure.

Step 2 Determine the quadrant where the terminal side of the given angle lies.
Observe that or is located in Quadrant II.
Therefore, the x-coordinate is negative and the y-coordinate is positive.
