What is substance abuse?
When we are sick, doctors give us medicines to use.
- When given those medicines we are told how much to take.
- If we follow the doctors instructions we are not abusing drugs.
- However, if we take more of these medicines than we are told, then we are
abusing them.
- When we take drugs or medicines more than we are told, it is called substance
abuse.
- Substances that can be abused are alcohol, wine, beer or medicines.
- Other people sniff substances like petrol or glue.
- Abusing substances is very dangerous it damages our bodies and makes us sick.
Alcohol
Alcohol is a substance found in beer and wine.
It is a drug.
If alcohol is taken into the body, it changes the way the person feels and acts.
Only adults are allowed to buy alcohol.
Children should not drink alcohol.
Smoking Is Dangerous
People usually smoke cigarettes.
Cigarettes contain nicotine.
Nicotine is a drug found in the tobacco plant.
Nicotine damages your body especially lungs.
It makes your teeth yellow and it makes you cough badly.
Smoking is not only bad for the person who does it, it is also bad for the
person around him.
