Linking verbs are kinds of verbs that do not express actions.
Instead, they express a state of being or condition. They
connect the subject to the rest of the words in the sentence.
Be-verbs are used as linking verbs
(Examples: am, is, are, was, were).
The be-verb am is used as a
linking verb together with the
pronoun I.
Examples:
I am a loyal fan of Mr. Rivera’s kindness to everyone.
I am happy because my grandmother will visit our house
tomorrow.
The be-verb is links to
singular subjects in
the present time.
Examples:
English is my favorite
subject.
She is pretty with her red
dress.
The be-verb are is used
for plural subjects and
for the pronoun You
Examples:
The children are playing in the playground.
The students are listening to their teacher.
The linking verb was
links to singular
subject in past time.
Examples:
Zel was walking at the park
when I saw Samuel.
She was nervous before the
result of the tests released.
The linking verb were is
used together with a
plural subject in the
past time frame too.
Examples:
You were alone at lunch.
