BASKETBALL
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
 identify the basic skills needed in playing
basketball and;

how to play the said team sport for a holistic

WHAT IS BASKETBALL?
It is a team sport where a player
aims to shoot a ball through a
basket that is horizontally positioned
to score points while following a set
of rules.
HISTORY
 December 1891 – the date when
Basketball was invented
James Naismith –
a Canadian educator
and physician;
invented the game
 Young Men’s Christian Association
Training School – (Springfield College
nowadays) located at Springfield,
Massachusetts; the place where Basketball
was invented
 An old soccer ball and a peach basket
– the first set of equipment used for the
game
 National Basketball League – (the first
pro league) founded year 1898, to protect
the players from exploitation and such
BASKETBALL SKILLS
AND EXECUTION
1. Shooting – the first basic skill to be
learned. Every basketball player loves to
shoot the ball and is the most practiced skill
in the game. If you cannot shoot, you
cannot score.
2. Dribbling – this allows you to advance
with the ball and move around the court
while you are in possession of the ball.

3. Passing – one of the most important skills in the
game, for it is a team sport where the group should
function as one, involving all players inside the
playing court.
Kinds of Passing
a. Overhead Pass – above the head
b. Chest Pass – chest level
c. Bounce Pass – passing through making the ball
bounce to the floor towards a teammate.
4. Rebounding – it means making your team
gain a chance to shoot again while the other
team actually loses it.
5. Running – this skill is used in offensive or
defensive plays, passing, receiving,
shooting, and rebounding.
FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT
IN BASKETBALL
1. Basketball Court
 Size (NBA) – 94ft. long by 50ft. wide

2.Backboard and Rim


 Backboard – 6ft. wide by 42 in. tall, inner
square – 24in. wide by 18in. tall
 Rim – 18in. in diameter
 From ground to rim – 10ft.
3.Ball
 An inflated sphere with an outer covering
measuring 75cm-78cm in circumference and
weighs 600g-650g
 Must be made in leather for official
competitions
