 NON-LINEAR TEXT
Non-linear text is the opposite of linear text. As its name suggests, it is
nonlinear and non-sequential. In other words, the readers do not have to
go through the text in a sequential manner in order to make sense of the
text. This type of text has many reading paths since it’s the readers who
decide the sequence of reading, not the author of the text.

There are many definitions of the term non-linear text. Most people
consider texts with visuals or graphs along with it as examples for
nonlinear texts. Some examples include flowcharts, charts, and graphs
(ex: pie chart, bar graphs), graphical organizers such as knowledge maps
and story maps.

1. PIE GRAPH
Pie Graph or Circle Graph
usually gives information in
percentage. The whole circle
represents a total number of
100% of something, and each
part represents a fraction or
percentage of the whole.
2. DIAGRAM
Diagram is a drawing that
illustrates and explains how
some things are put together
or how something operates.
It has labels to help you
identify parts and see the
relationship of those parts to
the whole.
3. CHART
Chart is a drawing that
shows organization or
relationships through the
use of words, pictures, or
symbols, or a combination of
all three. It can also show
the steps involved in a
process or procedure
4. LINE GRAPH
A common type of chart
which displays
information as a series of
data points connected by
straight line segments to
show trends.
It is used to show
information that changes
5. BAR GRAPH
Presents categorical data
with
rectangular bars with
heights or lengths
proportional to the values
that they represent.
The bars can be plotted
vertically or horizontally.

ORGANIZER
A communication tool that
uses visual symbols to
express knowledge,
concepts, or thoughts and
the relationships between
them.

facilitate learning and

concepts.
Remember…
Multimodal text is defined as a combination of
two or more communication modes, as texts only
involving visual elements.
Multimodal texts have the ability to improve
comprehension for students.
Multimodal texts can also increase motivation.
Allowing students to create multimodal texts can
help them express their learning in different
ways.
