• MEASUREMENT CAN BE DEFINED IN THE WIDE SENSE AS A PROCESS OF EMPIRICAL,
OBJECTIVE ASSIGNMENT OF SYMBOLS TO ATTRIBUTES OF OBJECTS AND EVENTS OF
THE REAL WORLD IN SUCH A WAY AS TO , OR TO DESCRIBE THEM.

• THE PRACTICAL PURSUIT OF MEASUREMENT AROSE IN THE EARLIEST STAGES OF THE
MATERIAL CULTURE OF MAN.
• THE ANCIENT GREEKS WERE THE FIRST TO INVESTIGATE THE PHILOSOPHICAL
FOUNDATIONS OF MEASUREMENT.
• THE MIDDLE AGES SAW MUCH SCHOLARLY STUDY OF THE THEORY OF
MEASUREMENT,
• THE RISE OF MODERN SCIENCE, FROM GALILEO, THROUGH NEWTON TO LAGRANGE
AND MAXWELL, PUT MATHEMATICS AT THE HEART OF PHYSICS, APPLIED
MEASUREMENT TO PHYSICAL OBSERVATION, AND DEVELOPED COMPREHENSIVE
MATHEMATICAL THEORIES OF DOMAINS OF PHYSICS.
• MODERN MEASUREMENT THEORY HAS BEEN DEBATED IN THE MEASUREMENT AND
INSTRUMENTATION TECHNOLOGY COMMUNITY SINCE THE 1970S.

• INVESTIGATES HOW STUDENTS UNDERSTAND AND APPLY THE


AREA UNDER THE CURVE CONCEPT AND THE INTEGRAL - AREA
RELATION IN SOLVING INTRODUCTORY PHYSICS PROBLEMS.
• THE RESEARCH METHODOLOGY USED IN THIS STUDY WAS THE
INDIVIDUAL INTERVIEW. THIS METHOD HAD AN ADVANTAGE IN
THAT IT ALLOWED US TO GAIN INSIGHT INTO HOW INDIVIDUAL
STUDENTS INTERACTED WITH THE CONCEPT OF AN INTEGRAL AS
AREA UNDER THE CURVE.
