CCU
The CDMA Channel Unit (CCU) circuit pack performs the
baseband processing for voice and 3G1X data calls, coding
and decoding.
It sets up and monitors the status of all the CDMA Traffic and
overhead channels for the forward and reverse links.
Various types available, i.e.. CCU-20, CCU-32 and CCU-64
(20, 32, and 64 channel elements, respectively).
Each CE can be assigned to perform pilot, sync, paging,
quick paging, access or traffic channel functions
Modcells 1.0 and 2.0 support up to 6 CCUs per CDM.
Modcell 3.0 supports up to 4 CCUs per CDM.
EVMs
The 1xEV-DO Modem pair (EVM) is a set of 2 individual circuit cards, EVT
and EVR, that plug in the CCU slots of the digital shelf.
The EVT (EVM transmit board) and EVR (EVM receive board) pair supports
one 1xEV-DO carrier. Only (1) pair per CDM is allowed, and cannot co-
exist with CCUs in the same CDM.
The EVT performs baseband processing for the 1xEV-DO air interface
forward link channels. It receives packet data from the URCm and
performs baseband processing to convert the packet data into 1xEV-DO
forward link waveform and forward it to the radio.
The EVR performs baseband processing for the 1xEV-DO air interface
reverse link channels. It receives the baseband signals from the radio,
demodulates and decodes the data and send it to the URCm.
The EVR also demodulates and passes the Power Control (PC) bits and
Data Rate Control (DRC) bits for the EVT modem.

System timing is dependent of the TFU, OM, Smart switch, and GPS.
The TFU, timing and frequency unit, generates all the clocks required to synchronize the BTS to the network
and other BTSs.
The TFU has a built-in GPS receiver, which is used to discipline the OM using the GPS source as a true
reference.
The Rubidium Oscillator Module (OMR) is capable of running for 24 hrs without a GPS reference signal, while
the Quartz Cristal Oscillator Module (OMQ) for only 8 hrs. Running without a GPS reference signal is known
as flywheeling.
The OMR is used as the primary OM and the OMQ as the backup OM. Their outputs are connected to the
smart switch.
The Smart switch distributes the OM’s 15 MHz signal to the TFUs and radios. It also switches from one OM
to the other when it detects a failure.

URCII - supports up to eight T1s and up to five 3G-1X carriers
URCm – modified version of the URC, compatible with the
CRC, used to replace legacy Modcell CRC in order to have the
functionality required for EVDO.
CMU
The CMU is the equivalent of the CCU in legacy Modcells
The CDMA Modem Unit (CMU) circuit pack performs the baseband
processing for voice and 3G1X data calls, coding and decoding.
It sets up and monitors the status of all the CDMA Traffic and
overhead channels for the forward and reverse links.
Each CE can be assigned to perform pilot, sync, paging, quick
paging, access or traffic channel functions
CMUs come in various CE density and can support 2 carriers each.
CMU-II = 32 CEs, CMU-III = 64 CEs, CMU-IV = 128 CEs, CMU-V = 256 CEs
12 CMU slots available
EVMs/SBEVM
The 1xEV-DO Modem pair (EVM) is a set of 2 individual circuit cards, EVT
and EVR, that plug in the CCU slots of the digital shelf.
The EVT (EVM transmit board) and EVR (EVM receive board) pair supports
one 1xEV-DO carrier.
The EVT performs baseband processing for the 1xEV-DO air interface
forward link channels. It receives packet data from the URC and performs
baseband processing to convert the packet data into 1xEV-DO forward link
waveform and forward it to the radio.
The EVR performs baseband processing for the 1xEV-DO air interface
reverse link channels. It receives the baseband signals from the radio,
demodulates and decodes the data and send it to the URC.
The EVR also demodulates and passes the Power Control (PC) bits and
Data Rate Control (DRC) bits for the EVT modem.
SBEVM – The Single Board EVM is a circuit pack that contains the EVT and
EVR functionalities in one board, instead of a pair. It also supports Rev. A
data rates.
