INTRODUCTION
 With the emergence of new standards and protocols, the demand for wireless
communication but with added capabilities such as seamless global coverage and
ubiquitous interfacing with various systems and standards is needed.

 There is also a need for user controlled Quality of Service(QoS) and connectivity,
regardless of the location being fixed or dynamic.
DEFINITION OF SDR

 SDR or Software Defined Radio can be defined as –

“Software radio is a radio that is substantially defined in software and whose physical
layer behavior can be significantly altered through changes to its software. ”

 The SDR Forum defines the ultimate software radio (USR) as a radio that accepts
fully programmable traffic and control information and supports a broad range of
frequencies, air-interfaces, and applications software .

 Therefore it refers to a radio that derives its flexibility through software while using a
static hardware platform.

SCOPE OUTPUT
DESCRIPTION

 Bernoulli Binary Generator block generates random binary numbers using a Bernoulli
distribution.
 Convolution Encoder convolutionally encodes bit sequences of any length. It takes the
bit sequence and constraint length as input.
 The FIR Interpolation block resamples the discrete-time input at a rate L times faster
than the input sample rate, where L is the integer value you specify for the
Interpolation factor parameter.
 Automatic Gain Control (AGC) automatically adjusts the output power of the signal at
required level.
 AWGN channel adds white Gaussian noise to the signal that passes through it.
 The Raised Cosine Receive Filter block filters the input signal using a normal raised cosine
FIR filter or a square root raised cosine FIR filter. It can also down-sample the filtered signal.
 The FIR Decimation block resamples the discrete-time input at a rate K times slower than the
input sample rate, where K is the integer value you specify for the Decimation factor
parameter.
 Viterbi Decoder Decodes convolutionally encoded data using Viterbi algorithm. This block can
process several symbols at a time for faster performance.
 The Raised Cosine Transmit Filter block up-samples and filters the input signal using
a normal raised cosine FIR filter or a square root raised cosine FIR filter.
BENEFITS OF SDR
 Multifunctionality – By using various short range networks to enhance the services by
leveraging other devices that provide complementary services.
 Global Mobility – The ability to operate with various standards that exists in different
geographical regions of the world.
 Compactness and power efficient – SDR’s are very compact and hence power efficient as the
same piece of hardware is used to implement multiple systems and interfaces.
 Easy to manufacture as fewer pieces of hardware required.
 Ease to upgrade as only the software needs to be updated without disrupting the current
infrastructure.
CONCLUSION

 SDR is the most anticipated and upcoming technology with a variety of uses
across a number of sectors like satellite communication, wireless internet
connectivity, military applications, etc. SDR (Cognitive radio) can also
intelligently sense and adjust according to spectrum access and user needs.

 Therefore the country which invests the most in SDR and becomes a pioneer in
SDR technology will benefit the most as SDR will be involved in every facet of
our lives in the coming years.
