Spectrum Storage Suite TradeUp Tips
Time TradeUp You want to tradeup the client to the Spectrum Storage Suite prior to their S&S
With Renewal, so you can leverage their S&S Renewal to fund a portion of the tradeup
cost. Spectrum Storage Suite resets warranty period, so client does not renew
S&S Renewal software maintenance on their current Spectrum Storage Software Programs.
Instead, position this funding to pay for a portion of the tradeup costs.
Time TradeUp Spectrum Storage Suite TradeUp Quantity tends to be less than the client's
with “Purchase” current state deployment, so its imperative that the client was planning to
purchase additional licenses of programs in use today.
Caution: Spectrum Storage Suite TradeUp resets warranty period. If the client has prepaid
Prepaid S&S software maintenance on their current Spectrum Storage Software Programs, the
Spectrum Storage Suite TradeUp does not protect the prepaid software
maintenace. No credit, no refunds for prepaid software maintenance.
Caution: Differential Licensing for VSC may be advantageous for clients with lots of
Differential Category 3 Storage. Spectrum Storage Suite licensing based on terabytes, so
VSC may have a price advantage for clients managing/virtualizing Category 3
Licensing Storage.

Systems Storage Software, IBM Confidential 2018 31

Spectrum Storage Suite Licensing Guidelines
• When a given terabyte of storage is managed by Control (TPC), you license the terabytes of storage managed by
Control (TPC).
• If the client has deployed Spectrum Virtualize (SVC, SVC Flashcopy and SVC GMM), Spectrum Compression (RtC),
and/or Spectrum Accelerate, you don't count these software programs as long as the terabyte of storage is managed
by Control (TPC).
• If the client has deployed Spectrum Virtualize (SVC, SVC Flashcopy and SVC GMM), Spectrum Compression (RtC),
and/or Spectrum Accelerate, you license the aggregate sum of terabytes of storage managed by each software
program when the terabyte of storage is not managed by Control (TPC).
• If the client uses Spectrum Scale and it is managed by Control (TPC), you don't count Scale.
• If the client uses Spectrum Scale and it is not managed by Control (TPC), you license the physical useable terabytes of
Scale.
• If the client uses Cloud Object Storage (COS) and it is managed by Control (TPC), you don't count COS.
• If the client uses Cloud Object Storage (COS) and its not managed by Control, you license the raw physical capacity.
• If the client uses Spectrum Protect (TSM), you don't count the backend terabytes of data when the data resides on disk
managed by Control (TPC).
• If the client uses Spectrum Protect (TSM), you don't count the backend terabytes of data when the data resides on
Scale.
• If the client uses Spectrum Protect(TSM) and Scale serves as a gateway to Spectrum Archive (LTFS), you license the
Spectrum Protect backend terabytes of data residing in Spectrum Archive.
• If the client uses Spectrum Protect (TSM), you don't count the backend terabytes of data when the data resides on
COS.
• If the client uses Spectrum Protect (TSM), you license the backend terabytes of data (1) when the data resides on disk
not managed by Control (TPC) and (2) when the data resides on tape.
• Spectrum Archive (LTFS, Linear Tape File System) is free and not measured.

“Live” Customer Example

Systems Storage Software, IBM Confidential 2018 41

IBM Spectrum Storage Suite
A single software license for all your changing software-defined storage needs
Spectrum Storage Suite provides three significant benefits:
Customer owns today
*Access to a broad portfolio of software-defined storage solutions
IBM Spectrum Control
*Nimble licensing model allows for software swapping as your infrastructure changes and evolves
• Customer leverages Control (TPC), Virtualize (SVC), and Compression (RtC) for your SAN storage.  Over
Customer owns today
IBM Spectrum Protect time, the use of Control and Virtualize may evolve to Scale and Control for file/object workloads.
• Today, you are leveraging 2.5 PB of Scale/ESS as a Spectrum Protect storage pool.  Continuing this strategy,
along with Spectrum Protect data deduplication, you can move more data to Scale/ESS, downsizing your
Customer owns today IBM Spectrum Virtualize Data Domain environment.
• Furthermore, you can implement a third tier, and move non-production archive data to Cloud Object Storage.
• With the Spectrum Storage Suite, you do not need to buy additional licenses, just re-deploy to new workloads
IBM Spectrum Archive and leverage needed components.  Spectrum Storage Suite gives you the flexibility to use and re-use, quickly
adapting to new use case requirements.

IBM Spectrum Accelerate *Stackable licensing model to maximize software value while minimizing licensing requirement
• Spectrum Storage Suite is a single software license that would entitle you to deploy any combination of our
software-defined storage solutions on the same licensed disk infrastructure.
IBM Spectrum Scale • Once you deploy Control (TPC) on the target disk, you can deploy Virtualize (SVC) and Compression (RtC)
and its one license per terabyte. You can even store your Protect backup data on that same target disk
without requiring additional licensing if you choose.
IBM Cloud Object Storage • If you monitor Scale and COS with Control and continue moving production back up data to your Scale/ESS
environment, and archive data to COS, you license once and leverage as many of the software-defined
storage solutions as needed on that target disk.

Spectrum Storage Evolution
Spectrum Storage Suite -
Provides unlimited access to IBM’s comprehensive set of software-defined storage tools with convenient per-TB pricing

Current State with 10% growth rate:

Future State Example:

Goal is Spectrum Protect deduplication, moving to Scale and COS storage tiers for back up’s
• Spectrum Protect 5324 TB’s deduplicated moving to Scale and COS
• Point Control at Scale and COS, stacking benefit

Gain the entire Software Defined Storage portfolio, and reuse TB’s as workloads evolve.
IBM
* Assumptions on Current State: Systems
Spectrum Storage Suite Tips for Success…

• Good Candidates
• Infrastructure Candidate… Control (TPC), Virtualize (SVC), Compression (RtC), Accelerate (XIV
Software, buying as part of hardware today)
• Infrastructure Candidate with Spectrum Protect… backing up Spectrum Protect Primary Storage Pool
data to disk or mostly disk, which is monitored by Control (TPC).

• Bad Candidates
• Spectrum Protect with lots of data stored on tape
• Scale Socket Model
• Significant Category 3 Storage Environment with VSC more cost-effective

Leverage Spectrum Storage Suite for the “right fit”

• License Spectrum Storage Suite for Control, Virtualize (SVC, SVC Flashcopy, SVC GMM, SVC RtC)
and Accelerate and license Spectrum Protect Suite FrontEnd for data protection

• Leverage S&S Renewal to fund tradeup costs.

Notes:
Performance is in Internal Throughput Rate (ITR) ratio based on measurements and projections using standard IBM benchmarks in a controlled environment. The actual throughput that any user will experience will vary
depending upon considerations such as the amount of multiprogramming in the user's job stream, the I/O configuration, the storage configuration, and the workload processed. Therefore, no assurance can be given
that an individual user will achieve throughput improvements equivalent to the performance ratios stated here.

All customer examples cited or described in this presentation are presented as illustrations of the manner in which some customers have used IBM products and the results they may have achieved. Actual
environmental costs and performance characteristics will vary depending on individual customer configurations and conditions.
