A BRIEF HISTORY AND CAMPUS TOUR

Bog Walk,
Riversdale
The Advent message was preached in
Troy, Trelawney about 1907

The Peart family accepted the message

And wanted their daughter Maud Peart


out of the Government Teachers
College

Miss Peart wrote the then Educational


Secretary of the General Conference
of Seventh-day Adventist about setting
up a school in Jamaica

Pastor Beckner and Peart went in


search of lands and a 96-acre was
bought at Willowdene near Bog walk
in St Catherine
In 1907 a 507 acre was bought at
Riversdale with the land at
Willowdene sold to help finance the
Riversdale property
The school closed because of
ill-health of staff and students
Miss Peart continued a
Church School after the
principal returned to the
United states

Mrs Peart-Goulbourne died in


Nov 1976
First graduates in1923 from the 12th grade
In 1926 the school was upgraded to a 14 th grade and
included subjects like Ministry, Nursing, Teaching,
Secretarial Science and Bible study
In 1936 it gained Junior college status and its name
was changed to West Indian Training College
Senior College status was obtained in when the
institution started its first four yr degree program,
Bachelor of Theology and the name was again
changed to West Indies College
June 24, 1999, Charter Day, the name
Northern Caribbean University was conferred on
the institution

Unfortunately the school closed and the
then principal returned to the USA,
while Maud Peart continued to hold a
church school
1918 under the leadership of Elder G.A.
Roberts Chairman of the Board the 181-
acre Coolsworthy property, two miles
south of Mandeville was bought
School began in January of 1919 with
five (5) boarding students at a rented
property on Caledonia Rd in Mandeville
Began August of 1919 at its present
location
The buildings at Riversdale were
dismantled and the wooden structure
opposite Sorenson Hall and the wooden
cafeteria at the time were made from
lumber from Riversdale
