RESEARCH IS BASE FOR DECISION MAKING
Good decision making gets a “yes” answer to the following questions:
 Do managers identify where exactly the problem lies?
 Do they correctly recognize the relevant factors in the situation needing
investigation?
 Do they know what types of information are to be gathered and how?
 Do they know how to use collected information for drawing appropriate
conclusions to make the right decisions?
 Do they know how to implement the results of this process to solve the
problem?
This is the essence of research that makes a manager knowledgeable about the
various steps involved in finding solutions to problematic issues.
DEFINITIONS

 Research: Systematic investigative process employed to increase or revise

current knowledge by discovering new facts.

 Research: The systematic investigation into and study of materials and

sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.

 Research: In the broadest sense of the word, research includes any formal

gathering of data, information and facts for the advancement of

professional or commercial purposes such as determining opportunities and
goals for a business.

 Scientific Research: “an organized, systematic, data based, critical, objective,
scientific inquiry or investigation into a specific problem, undertaken with the
purpose of finding answer or solution to it.” (Sekaran, 2001)
Organized: Process (step by step action)
Systematic: Based on a theory
Data Based: Both research and data must be based on data
Critical: It must show the positive and negative aspects of result
Objective: The research must impersonal, without biasness
Scientific: It must be based on scientific tools (Interview, Questionnaire, Observation)

 Research corrects perceptions as well as expands them.
 Research gather information on subject or phenomena we lack or have
little knowledge about it.
 Research develops and evaluates concepts, practices and theories.
 Research also develops and evaluate methods that test concepts,
practices and theories.
 Research obtain knowledge for practical purposes like solving problems
on population explosion (sudden increase in the size of population), drug
addiction, immature misbehavior and the like.
 Research provides hard facts which serve as base for planning, decision
making, project implementation and evaluation.
