1.1. Background of the Study

PRAGMATICS

Pragmatics as a study of the way humans use


their language in communication, based itself
this study to determines how the affect that
used by human language.
A study of pragmatics is also to understanding
of how the human mind works and how
humans communicate.
SPEECH ACT

Speech act is an action that


performed by an utterance. When
someone expresses something, he/she
doesn’t only produce the utterances that
contained grammatical structures and
words, but he/she also performs an
action through the utterances.
EXPRESSIVE

Expressive is define as expressing


the state of mind, the attitudes, and also
the feelings of speaker. The expressive
often used by people in producing the
utterance to communicate in their daily
life.
1.2. Problem of the Study

What kinds of expressives speech


act are found in “Orphan” movie
script ?

Which the most dominant of


expressives speech act is used by the
characters in “Orphan” movie
script?
1.3. Objectives of the Study

1. To find out the kinds of expressive


speech acts that found in “Orphan”
movie script.
2. To identify the most dominant of
expressive speech acts that used by
the main characters in “Orphan”
movie script.
1.4. Scope of the Study

In this research, I’ll limit the study to


make be more focus when analyze the
data. It will be focus on the expressives
speech act. The data will classified based
on Searle’s theory.

Expressives of Thanking

Expressive of thanking is a kind of utterance


that will be expressed by someone to show that the
way people being grateful for something that
someone has been done.

For example : 
“Thank you for your suggestion”.
Expressives of Apologizing

Expressive of apologizing is a kind of utterance


that will be expressed by speaker, when feel regret
to something that happened.

For example:
“I really apologize for that”.
Expressives of Congratulating

Expressive of congratulating is a kind of utterance


that will be expressed shows by speaker, when
feel sympathy toward what has been happening to
the hearer including the feeling of pleasure toward
the hearer’s luck.

For example:
“I’d like to say congratulate for your success”.
Expressives of Greeting

Expressive of greeting is a kind of utterance that


will be expressed by speaker to show an expression
of welcoming and an act of greeting by the speaker
to the hearer.

For example :

“Good Morning…”

“ How are you?”


Expressives of Wishing

Expressive of wishing is a kind of utterance


that expressed by speaker to show an expression
of desire or wants to expect it becomes reality.
The speaker wants to express what he/she hopes
to be come true as what he is expected.

For example:
“I wish I had a better chance”.
Expressives of Attitude

Expressive of attitudes is a kind of utterance that


expressed by speaker to show an expression of
criticizing. In this case, expressive of attitudes is
about complaining or express the feeling of disagree
or dislike with the listener’s attitude.

For example:
“I think, that’s not good for you…”.

CHAPTER III
METHOD OF RESEARCH

3.1. Research Design


The research used qualitative method and
the data will analyzed descriptively. The
descriptive qualitative does not use the numeral
or the statistic procedures in analyzing the data,
but the writer analyzing the data descriptively.
3.2. Source of Data

This research using the movie script as the


source of data. The data were taken from the
dialogue or conversation among all characters
in Orphan movie script.
3.3. Technique of Collecting Data

In this thesis, There are some steps in collecting


data:

1. Downloading the script of Orphan movie from


internet.
2. Reading the script of Orphan movie.
3. Collecting and classifying the data based on
Searle’s theory.
4. Making the table from the data which contains
expressives speech act.
3.4 Technique of Analyzing Data

In analyzing the data, this thesis has some


steps :

 The writer identified the data which collected.


 The writer categorized the data into the kinds of
expressive speech act.
 The writer described and analyzed the utterances.
 Present the data in the percentage form, to count
the percentage of data.

In this thesis, the writer used Nawawi’s formula to count the
percentage the data of each kinds of expressives speech act. This is the

Conclusion and Suggestion

5.1. Conclusion

Based on the research finding, there are 64


utterances of expressives that found in “Orphan” movie
script. There are six kinds of expressives speech act.
They are expressives of thanking, expressives of
apologizing, expressives of congratulating, expressives
of greeting, expressive of wishing, and expressives of
attitudes.
5.2. Suggestion
In analyzing expressives speech act based on
Searle’s theory, the writer would like to suggest the
readers to understand about expressives speech act. The
reader should be know about all the kinds of
expressives speech act.
