INTRODUCTION
 What is soil engineering?
 Soil engineering is an applied science dealing
with application of principle of soil mechanics
to practical problems. It includes soil
investigation ,design and construction of
foundation ,earth retaining and earth
structure..
 What is soil mechanics?
 Soil mechanics is the branch of engineering
that deals with the engineering properties of
soil and its behaviour under stress and strains.
MAJAR SOIL DEPOSITS IN INDIA.

 Alluvial soil: It found in north india and the thickness of

each layer depends upon the nature of flood and terrain
in the river causing deposition
 Black cotton soil: it is mainly found in south india and
this soil have shrinkage and shearing strength of soil is
low
 Lateritic soil: these soil are formed by decomposition of
rocks bases and silica and accumulation of iron oxide
and aluminium
 Desert soil: it is mainly found in large part of rajasthan
and this soil is non-plastic and highly porous
 Marine deposits: marine deposits mainly confined a
narrow belt near a coast and the soil have low shearing
strength and highly compressible
INDEX PROPERTIES.

 Water content
 Specific gravity
 Consistency limit
 Thixotrophy
 Sensitivity
WATER CONTENT

 The amount of moisture available in the soil

is termed as moisture content in soil, which
is mathematically given as
 Water content=Mw/Md*100

 Two method of determination of water

content are
 OVEN DRYING METHOD
 RAPID MOISTURE METHOD
SPECIFIC GRAVITY

 It is defined as the ratio of the weight of an

equal volume of distilled water at that temp
both weights taken in air.

 Determination of specific gravity

 DENSITY BOTTLE METHOD
 PYCNOMETER METHOD
CONSISTENCY LIMIT

 Consistency of fine grained soil in a physical state in

which its exits or water contained at which soil changes
one state to another .Swedish agriculture engineer
Atterberg mentain that a fine grained soil can exits in
four state is known as consistency limit or Atterberg
limit.

 Liquid limit
 Plastic limit
 Shrinkage limit
THIXOTROPHY AND SENSITIVITY.

THIXOTROPHY- it is a property of soil due to

which loss in shear strength can be regained.

SENSITIVITY- the degree of disturbance

achieved on remolding is represented by
sensitivity. These soil are sensitive which
undergo large loss in shear strength due to
remolding. It is a ratio of unconfined
compressive strength of undisturbed sample
upon unconfined compressive strength of
remolded sample.
