Climate Change

What is climate Change

• Climate change is a change in the usual weather found in a place. This
could be a change in how much rain a place usually gets in a year. Or
it could be a change in a place's usual temperature for a month or
season.
• Climate change is also a change in Earth's climate. This could be a
change in Earth's usual temperature. Or it could be a change in where
rain and snow usually fall on Earth.
• Weather can change in just a few hours. Climate takes hundreds or
even millions of years to change.
Reasons why climate is changing?
• Driving cars
• Burning coal
• Burning oil
• Heaters and air conditioners
• Use of electricity
Gases causing Global Warming
• Carbon Dioxide
• Methane
• Nitrous Oxide
• Water Vapor
• Green House Gases
• Scientists attribute the global warming
trend observed since the mid-20th century
Greenhouse Effect to the human expansion of the
"greenhouse effect"— warning that results
when the atmosphere traps heat radiating
from Earth toward space.

• Certain gases in the atmosphere block heat

from escaping.
• They are called Green House Gases
• They lock the heat inside the earth
• They increase the temperature of the earth.
Impacts of Climate Change
• Rising Sea levels and Flooding
• Increased heat
• Drought and insect outbreaks
• Increased wildfires
• Declining water supplies
• Reduced agricultural yields,
• Erosion in coastal areas
Consequences of
Climate Change
• More fires like the
ones in Australia last
year
• More natural
calamities such as
Hurricanes and
Cyclones
• Disasters such as
London Smog
• Sinking of Islands
such as Sri Lanka,
Bangladesh and
Hawaii
Green House Gases: Definition

Greenhouse gases are gases in Earth's atmosphere that trap

heat. They prevent the heat that the sunlight brings from leaving
the atmosphere. The main greenhouse gases are: Water vapor.
Carbon dioxide and Methane
Methane; Water Vapor; Carbon Dioxide
How are they produced?
Man Made Natural
Industrial Pollution Plant decay in wetlands
Vehicular Pollution Animal digestion
Burning biogas Human and animal
respiration
Are Greenhouse gases evil?
• No
• They are essential to life as they trap heat from escaping
• But if they are in excess, as they are today, they trap more heat and
lead to rise in global temperatures
• Rise in temperatures leads to other environmental complications
Biodiversity
• Biodiversity is a term used to
describe the enormous variety
of life on Earth.
• Biodiversity refers to every living
thing, including plants, bacteria,
animals, and humans
Converting forest into agricultural land
• Forests conversion involves
removing natural forests to meet
other land needs, such as
plantations, agriculture, pasture for
cattle settlements and mining. This
process is usually irreversible
• Where dies it happen-in forests
• Animals impacted by deforestation-
wild life: elephants, lions, deers etc.
• Some main crops grown on
agricultural plantation- wheat,
barley, corn.
• Deforestation : cutting of trees
• Agricultural land: land used for
growing food
• Biodiversity: all living beings
together are called Earth’s
biodiversity
Converting Forest
into livestock
• Where does it happen –
Amazon Forest
• Biodiversity is impacted by
livestock ranches- 80% 0f
deforestation happens because
of cattle ranching.
• Livestock: animals that give us
food eg: cow, hens, pigs, goat
• Ranches: place where livestock
lives
How is biodiversity impacted by livestock?

•  Turning forests and

savannas over to
agriculture–especially
animal agriculture,
because it requires so
much land–destroys
native plant and animal
species and their
habitat.
How do livestock effect global warming?
• The most important greenhouse
gases from animal agriculture
are methane and nitrous oxide.
Methane.
• Methane is a gas which has an
effect on global warming 28
times higher than carbon dioxide
What is logging?
• Logging is the process of
cutting and processing trees to
produce timber and pulp to
supply the world’s markets for
furniture, construction, paper,
and other products
• Where does it happen- in forests
• Main uses of wood: furniture,
housing, paper industry
How Logging causes Deforestation
Cutting tress causes Deforestation

•Tree roots absorb water from the soil,

making the soil drier and able to store
more rainwater.
•Tree roots hold the soil in place,
reducing the movement of sediment
that can shrink river channels
downstream.
What is Human Overpopulation ?

• Human • Human population is negative-

overpopulation (or population resources are little and too many
overshoot) is a state in which people to consume them.
there are too many people,  • Current world population- 7
consuming too much, for the billion
environment to sustain (with
food, drinkable water,
breathable air, etc.).
