NORMS IN SOCIETY

Ms. Widi
Definition
◦ Norma comes from the Dutch language, namely "norm", which means
standard or guideline.

◦ Norm is a guideline that is used as a measure of human action. What is right

and what is wrong, and what is good and what is bad.

◦ The function of norms is to provide limits as orders or prohibitions in behavior.

So, norms are rules of action.

◦ If you violate the norm, you will get a penalty (punishment)

Characteristics of Norms

1. Norms come from the agreement of the community and are

generally unwritten. Norms are coercive in nature, so that
members of the public strictly adhere to them.

2. If the norm is violated, then those who violate the norm will
get sanctions. Sanctions can be in the form of reprimands, in
writing, to corporal punishment.
Types of Norms
There are four types of norms that apply to society, namely:

1. Religious Norms
2. The norms of Decency
3. Norm of Courtesy
4. Legal Norms
1. Religious Norms
Religious norms are rules that are accepted as commandments,
prohibitions, and teachings that come from God.

Religious norms are absolute and cannot be changed. For example,

doing worship, not lying, not killing, not stealing, and so on.

If you violate religious norms, you will get a sin.

2. The Norms of Decency
The norms of decency are regulations that are considered the voice of human
conscience.

This norm is in the form of morals, so that one can distinguish what is considered
good and what is considered bad.

For example, speaking politely to parents, wearing clothes according to

circumstances, and so on

Sanctions for violating the norm of decency are social sanctions, such as exclusion
from society.
3. Norms of Courtesy
The norm of politeness is the rule that comes from the association of a society.

The nature of this norm is relative. That is, the norms of politeness in one area can
be different from the norms of politeness in other areas.

These politeness norms govern how we should behave, talk, and interact in society.

For example, don't spit carelessly and always say thank you when given help from
anyone.

Sanctions for violating the norm of decency are ridicule or reproach.

4. Legal Norms
Legal norms are living regulations made by the government or state institutions.

For example, you must pay taxes, motorbikes and cars must have a SIM, and so
on.

Legal norms are coercive. The goal is to create order in society.

If they violate legal norms, they will receive strict sanctions, such as fines and
imprisonment.
The conclusion is…
Norms make us understand about what we
can do and what we shouldn't do.
