Started at age 14 as a nursing aid

Paediatric nurse
One of her teachers and mentors:
Dr. Dorothy Johnson – she was Roy’s
main influence to develop her
Nursing Theory
Adaptation of Children:
Roy had noticed the great resiliency of
children and their ability to adapt in
response to major physical and
psychological changes.
Sister Callista Roy has made a
numerous contributions to the
nursing and medical community
Her most famous contribution is the
`Roy Adaptation Model` first time it
was published on 1970
Her theory is currently one of the
most widely used framework in
nursing practice all over the world.
Roy’s Adaptation
Theory
Purpose of Roy’s Adaptation Theory

Stated as:
“the promotion of adaptation for individuals
and groups in each of the four adaptive
modes, thus contributing to health, quality of
life, and dying with dignity.”
Theoretical Assertions

The person continually experiences environmental

stimuli

Ultimately, a response is made and adaptation occurs.

This response may be either adaptive or ineffective
response
Theoretical Assertions
Adaptive Responses
Promote integrity and help the person to achieve
the goals of the adaptation, that is, they achieve
survival, growth, reproduction, mastery, personal
and environmental transformation.

Ineffective Responses
Responses that fail to achieve or threaten the goals
of adaptation
Theoretical Assertions

Nursing has a unique goal to assist the

person's adaptation effort by managing
the environment. The result is the
attainment of an optimal level of
wellness by the person.
Purpose of Roy Adaptation Theory

Roy explained that adaptation occurs when people

respond positively to environmental changes, and it is the
process and outcome of individuals and groups who use
conscious awareness, self-reflection, and choice to create
human and environmental integration.
METAPARADIGM
TYPES OF STIMULI
THREE TYPES OF STIMULI

Focal  include needs and changes within

the family members, among the
environment.
Stimuli
Example: Smoking
-Nicotine addiction
THREE TYPES OF STIMULI

Contextual those other stimuli that

influence the situation
Stimuli
Ex: Smoking
belief that smoking is enjoyable , relaxing part of routine
THREE TYPES OF STIMULI

Residual include the individual’s

beliefs or attitudes that may
influence the situation.
Stimuli
Ex: Smoking
beliefs about body image, and weight gain with smoking
cessation
Four
Adaptive Modes
The four adaptive modes of the
subsystem are how the regulator
and cognator mechanisms are
manifested; in other words, they
are the external expressions of the
above and internal processes.
Physiological Mode- oxygenation, nutrition, elimination,
activity, rest, and protection
 Self Concept Mode - Psychological and spiritual elements
Role Function Mode- primary, secondary, and tertiary
roles the person performs in society
 Interdependence Mode- coping mechanisms arising
from close relationships

Goal: Promote integrated adaptation in all four

modes = HEALTH

Theory Utilization
Title: Application of Roy’s Adaptation Model Utilizing the Nursing Process
Variable/s being studied:
Mrs. M is a 37 yr old, suffered multiple facial injury result of a motor vehicle accident
several months ago. The injuries have healed without complication, but she has
moderate residual scarring. Nurse assessment of the patient begins with the behaviours
manifested from the Four Adaptive Modes. The nurse uses observational skills, intuition,
measurement, and interviewing skills to collect data. The nurse verifies that Mrs. M has
adapted well following the motor vehicle accident. The exception is the Self-Concept
Mode: as evidenced by Mrs. M’s avoidance of social gatherings, wearing of dark glasses
and big hats, and wearing heavy make up to cover her scars.
RESULT OF THE STUDY:

Nurse and Mrs. M set goals to promote adaptation. Goal setting for Mrs. M within the
framework involves statements of measurable behavioral outcomes of nursing care that
promote adaptation related to body image within the Self- Concept Adaptive Mode.

The nurse and Mrs. M chooses intervention based on current best practices to promote
adaptation by either changing stimuli and strengthening Mrs. M.’s adaptive processes. T
nurse intervention being used in the study is counselling twice a month to strengthen
her psychological and emotional confidence.
