CAN I N E LYME D I SE ASE

IS ALSO C ALLED

CANINE BORRELIOSIS
Lyme is a tick born infectious disease of dog which is
characterized by malaise, fatigue, joint pain, swelling, renal
failure and neurological problems.

Cause
Lyme Disease is caused by a spirochete bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi

 Ticks are the vectors

 The “Deer Tick” Ixodes scapularis

PATHOGENESIS
 Tick is infected with Borrelia burgdorferi during feeding.

 Transmitted into the dog by a bite through the skin.

 Tick “cements” itself to the host in order to feed.

 Blood meal begins 30 min later.

 Usually takes around 8 hours to transmit Borrelia burgdorferi

 Travels through the bloodstream

Bacterial dissemination to the skin, heart, kidneys, peripheral and central

nervous systems and the joints.
 Three major focus are the CNS, Joints, and the Kidneys
•Clinical signs
• Generalized form
• Fever
• Loss of appetite
• Reduced energy
• Lameness (can be shifting, intermittent,
and recurring)
• Generalized stiffness, discomfort, or
pain
CLINICAL
CNS
SIGNS
Induce astrogliosis in the astrocytes, (proliferation & apoptosis).

 Blood-brain barrier weakend

Compromise nutrient supply, and ion balance.

 Induce astrocytes and microglia to produce toxic substances

Quinolinic acid , cytokines, interleukin-6, and Tumor necrosis factor-alpha

 Nerve cell damage leads to fatigue, malaise, and cognitive deficits.

 Increase stress hormones that interfere with neurotransmitter

efficacy.

kidney
 Protein-losing glomerulopathy

 Progressive acute renal failure

 Immune complexes in tubules

 JOINTS
 Chronic Lyme disease causes

 Induced autoimmune conditions or

 Acute pro-inflammatory action

 Severity of joint disease and pain varies among indviiduals

 Chronic erosive synovitis

 Warm to the touch,

 Swelling

 Painfull

 Fibrovascular tissue growth

 Tissue erosion
DIAGNOSIS
 History
 Clinical signs
 Postmortem lesions
 Lab Tests
ELISA Test
Indirect Fluorescent Antibody (IFA) Test
Western Immunoblot Test
Treatment
Antibiotics
The antibiotic of choice is
Doxycycline 5-10 mg/kg per day
Then according to the symptoms

 PREVENTION
1-Vaccination
2-Vaccination against Lyme disease
is recommended for pets that live in
endemic areas or that travel to areas
where Lyme disease is prevalent.
3- Prevents the ticks by tick
repellent
