This course provides an introduction to geology concepts applied to civil engineering problems. Topics include rock classification, soil properties, geologic structures, groundwater, and natural hazards. Students will learn to describe the role of geology in underground construction and apply geologic concepts to engineering projects. Coursework includes weekly assignments, quizzes, and exams to assess understanding of physical geology, mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, and geological investigation techniques relevant to civil engineering. A team project involves an engineering geology case study. Upon completing the course, students will be able to utilize their engineering and earth science backgrounds to address geological aspects of civil engineering designs and problems.
