Outline of the Presentation

Need of the Project

Broad Theme / Category

Scope / Objectives of the project

Methodology

Brief Note

Background Work (in Progress)

Budget details
Need of the project
 Limited conventional sources
with the limited petroleum sources, the stability of Indian economy is solely
dependent on the crude oil as
 About 85% of the crude oil is being imported
 The cost of the fuel increases frequently and the public sector petroleum
companies are bearing the losses by selling the fuels (Petrol, Diesel and LPG) at
subsidised rates
 Petroleum sources are diminishing with time

 Absence of RE potential Assessment system

India being a tropical country has huge potential in terms of renewable energy
sources, which have not been harnessed due to lack of proper assessment
 Absence of database on RE sources
There are no reliable data base which provide comprehensive data base on
renewable energy resources and there is a need for empirical assessment for
creating a data base on renewable energy sources

 Micro-grid project at NIE-CREST

The project output will be utilized for existing Micro-grid at NIE CREST: Micro-grids
for sustainable Global Development is research project being carried out jointly by
Wisconsin Electric Machines and Power Electronics Consortium (WEMPEC),
University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA and The National Institute of Engineering
(NIE), Mysuru, India.
 Decline in market for automobile industry and inclination towards electric
vehicles creates more dependency on electricity
The recent advances in electric vehicle technology are rendering the petroleum
fueled automobiles in lag and lag can only get longer. In this regard, more micro-
grids will be necessary for establishing charging stations in remote locations
Broad Theme / Category
Application of GPS Technology in Mapping RE Potential with respect to wind
energy, micro hydro, solar energy and bio-fuels at any given location for exploring
the possibility of establishing a Renewable Energy based micro-grid and
development of mobile application for creating the database
Scope / Objectives of the project
The scope of the project includes
1. Estimation of load (energy demand) at remote locations
2. Design and development of mobile application (App) for
mapping available RE sources
3. Field testing and validation of mobile app developed
4. Creation of database on feasible RE resources for micro-grid
Methodology
 Identification of locations for assessment of RE Potential
 Collection and compilation of data on Wind velocities at
selected locations for assessing wind energy potential
 Solar irradiance at selected locations for assessing solar energy
potential
 Discharge of streams and potential head at selected locations
for assessing hydro energy potential
 Density of bio-fuel plantations at selected locations for
assessing Bio-fuel potential
 Estimation of energy potential from each of these renewable
energy sources
 Budgeting of probable cost per unit of electrical energy
 Correlation of field data collected with the meteorological data
 Development of software application (Android Mobile App) for
processing the collected data and computing the RE
availability
Brief Note
Micro-grid is emerging to be a technically attractive approach for
meeting reliable supply of electricity by integrating various types
of electricity sources and storage devices and provide increased
availability in the presence of large scale grid disturbances
induced by severe weather events. Micro-grids are expected to find
a broad range of applications from autonomous systems in rural
communities to smart energy communities and energy-efficient
buildings. Micro-grids are emerging to become an effective means
of integrating various diverse sources of renewable energy such as
solar, wind, micro hydro and bio energy based electricity
generation systems with the grid, or independent of the grid in
rural applications
Background Work (in Progress)
Micro-grids for sustainable Global Development are being carried
out jointly by Wisconsin Electric Machines and Power Electronics
Consortium (WEMPEC), University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA
and The National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysuru, India.
The project involves two stages, Viz., development of micro-grid
with available renewable energy systems at NIE-CREST (Centre for
Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies) and field testing
the up scaled version of the same in a remote village Hamlet of
Mysore.
