In verb, we have this so-called TENSES which refers to

the period of the verb that indicates when the action occurs.
In English, we have this Present, Past, Future, verbs in
participle form and so forth. But in Filipino we only
have:

 In verb, we have this so-called, PAWATAS.

What is pawatas?
Pawatas/Infinitives ito ay mga pandiwang
–
hindi nababanghay sa aspekto. Binubuo ito ng
salitang-ugat at panlapi.

Pawatas/Infinitives –these are verbs that are not conjugated in aspect/tenses.

It consists of the root word and the suffix.

Halimbawa: sumikat, maglaro, lumakad, sumunod,

 How to conjugate verbs in Imperpektibo?
Formula: If the “pawatas” is in a form of the following:

MAG-verb = nag + repeat the first two/one

letter(s) of the first syllable of the root word.
Ex. Maglaba – nag+ lalaba = naglalaba

IN-verb = find the first syllable then repeat and

extract the first two letters of the root word
then insert the suffix IN.
Ex. Kinuha = kuha = kINukuha
 UM-verb = find the first syllable then
repeat and extract the first two letters of
the root word then insert the suffix UM.
Ex. Kumain = kain = kUMakain
Note: If the first syllable of the root word is in
one letter form, suffix will be put in front of the
first syllable of the root word then repeat the
first syllable.

Ex. Umalis = alis = umaalis

Formula: If the “pawatas” is in a form of the following:

MAG-verb = suffix MAG- + repeat the first two/one letter(s) of the

first syllable of the root word.
Ex. Maglaba – MAG+ lalaba = maglalaba
UM-verb = find the first syllable then repeat the first two/one
letter(s) of the root word.
Ex. Kumain = kain = kakain
Umalis = alis = aalis
IN-verb = find the first syllable then repeat the first two/one letter(s) of
the root word then connect the suffix –IN in the last part of the word.
Ex. Kinuha = kuha = kukuhain
Alisin = alis = aalisin

 How to conjugate verbs in PERPEKTIBO?
Formula: If the “pawatas” is in a form of the following:

MAG-verb = MAG will become NAG + then, connect it to the root word of
the word.
Ex. Maglaba – nag+ laba = naglaba

UM-verb = Usually, the given word in the pawatas will stay the same in
perpektibo form of the verb.
Ex. Kumain = kain = kumain
Umalis = alis = umalis

IN-verb = Usually, the given word in the pawatas will stay the same in perpektibo
form of the verb.
Ex. Kinuha = kuha = kinuha
