INTRODUCTION
The Chemical Health Risk Assessment (CHRA) conducted by the employer arising from the
use, handling, storage or transportation of chemical hazardous to health in their workplace.
as required by the Occupational Safety and Health (Use and Standard of Exposure of Chemicals
Hazardous to health) Regulation 2000.
CHRA is conducted with the purpose of enabling decision on appropriate control measures,
induction and training of employees, monitoring and health surveillance activities as may be
required protect the health of employees who may be exposed to chemicals hazardous to health
at work.
PURPOSE
Purpose of conducting CHRA is to enable decisions to be made on
appropriate control measures
induction and training of workers
the necessity of exposure monitoring programme
the necessity of medical surveillance programme; as may be required to protect the health of
workers who may be exposed to CHEMICAL HAZARDOUS TO HEALTH (CHTH) at work
OBJECTIVES
To identify the hazards posed by each CHEMICAL HAZARDOUS TO HEALTH (CHTH) use
within the workplace.
To evaluate the degree of exposure of workers to the chemical hazardous to health , either
through inhalation, dermal or ingestion.
To evaluate the adequacy of existing control measures
To recommend further appropriate control measures and prioritize actions to be taken to prevent
or reduce risks.
DUTIES OF ASSESSOR
Interpret the information in the safety data sheet (SDS) and labels.
To understand the hazard classification as prescribed by the Regulations.
Observe the conditions of work and foresee potential problems.
Communicate effectively with employees, contract workers, managers, specialists, and others.
Draw all the information together in a systematic way to form valid conclusions about
exposures and risks.
Report the findings accurately to all parties concerned.
Carry out of assessment of health risks arising from the use of chemicals hazardous to health at
the workplace.
ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
There are basically two approaches to conduct an assessment of risk to health arising from the
use of chemicals hazardous to health, any one of which may be applied depending on the hazard
class of the chemical, chemical use situation and the complexity of the work process.
i) Full Assessment
- Specific site CHRA
- Generic CHRA
SIMPLE ASSESSMENT
Conducted using method of simple risk assessment and control for chemicals.
CHRA METHODOLOGY
Gather Information
To identify all chemicals hazardous to health found in the workplace and to gather information
about the work and work practices involving chemicals hazardous to health.
