“Paete Woodcarving”
- The Paete Woodcarving tradition runs deep
in history, dating back in the pre-Spanish
era. Even the town's name, Pada, goes away
from the Spanish colonizer's norms of naming
places after saints. It was a result of a
misunderstanding between a native and a
Franciscan priest. When asked what the place
was, the native replied, There, referring to his
chisel He thought the priest was asking about
the tool he was using. By 1580, Paetenians
honed their Craft by carving remblos and
images used to ornate the churches in town
and neighboring towns in Laguna.

colonial rule, around the late 1800s, where the
wealthy ruling class who ruled Angono as
their hacienda strictly prohibited the common

festival in the entire year. The hardworking common
people used the higantes puppets in their once-a-
year festival, rendering the papier-mâché giants to
look like the hacienderos, mocking the owners
throughout the festivity. The art of papier-mâché
was said to have been learned by the common folk

“Itik-itik” Traditional Dance
- Itik-itik is a mimetic folk dance in
the Philippines. It originated in Surigao in
Philippines. Itik-itik was discovered in this town by
National Artist for Dance Francisca Reyes-Aquino.
Originating from a dance called Sibay and
performed to the tune of Dejado, the story was told
that an expert young dancer named Cayetana at a
barrio of Cantilan during a baptismal party had
become so carried away with the rhythm that she
began to improvise short, choppy steps similar to
ducks and then splash water on their backs. The
dance immediately became popular in the province
for stage performances and social dancing.
