BULGARIA
 Location: Bulgaria is situated in Southeastern Europe occupying the eastern part
of the Balkan Peninsula
 Was founded in 681 A.D.

 First settled by a Thracian tribe 3000 years ago

 One of the oldest countries in Europe

• Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria
• Pliska was the first Bulgarian
capital.

• Numerous high mountains, vast plains,
rivers, and lakes

Europe & passes through 10 countries.

• There are more than 4000 caves in Bulgaria.

supply of rose oil.
• The center of the rose oil industry is
Kazanlak.
• Each year, festivals are held
celebrating roses and rose oil.
• One of the most romantic places in
Bulgaria.
• The red rose - symbol of Bulgaria.
MONASTERIES
• Bulgaria’s official religion is Orthodox
Christianity
• There are more than 140 monasteries
in Bulgaria, dating back centuries ago
• The Rila Monastery is by far the most
well-known. It was established in the
10th century
• Another famous church, the Boyana
Church, is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site and was also constructed in the
10th century

FESTIVALS
• We have interesting Bulgarian
tradition.
• Only men take part in the
Mummers` Games in March.
They put scary masks and
costumes.
• Nestinarstvo - old Bulgarian
ritual. It involves a barefooted
dance on embers.
• Performed on the Day of Sts.
Constantine and Elena.
Fun Facts
1. According to the statistics, the country ranks third in Europe only
after Greece and Italy for the number of its valuable archaeological
monuments.
2. Bulgaria is the only country in Europe which has kept its name till
now.
3. Bulgaria gave Europe one of its official three alphabets -Cyrillic.

4. The oldest gold in Europe was found in Varna, Bulgaria.

5. “When The Lord gave the people land, the Bulgarians were the
last . When they went to him, all the land was distributed. So The
Lord thought for a moment, plucked a piece of paradise and gave
the Bulgarians. Bulgaria is a part of paradise.”
