NEWS ITEM
News items is a text that informs
the readers about newsworthy or
important events of the day.
Newsworthy which means
newsworthy, so not all events can
be reported. Only important events
or events that deserve to be
reported. If the incident is not
important then it is not worthy of
being reported and known to many
people.

News item text is a written public
information of which the purpose is
to inform readers about events of
the day which are considered
newsworthy or important.
Basically, a news item text answers
the 5W and 1H questions: what,
who, when, where, why, and how
relating to the newsworthy.
LANGUAGE FEATURE
1. Using the Simple Past Tense
The formula for the Simple Past Tense is :

Positive Subject + Predicate (Verb 2) + Object


Subject + Predicate (Was/Were) + Complement (Adjective/Noun/Adverb)
Negative Subject + Predicate (Did not + Verb 1) + Object
Subject + Predicate (Was/Were + Not) + Complement
Interroga Did + Subject + Verb 1 + Object?

Modality Subject + Could/Might/Had to/Would/Should + Verb 1

Example

2. Focus on specific circumstance
Meaning that what is discussed in the news item text is a special case that is current. Global
issues that have occurred for a long reported in news items.

3. Using the material process


A process thata use a verb that refers to a physical or physical activity.
Example
• The farmers dig the soil and found a buried temple.

• In South Kores, the flower blossoms in the Summer.

• The Fishermen sailed and caught the fish illegally.

• The airport police investigated a suspicious woman carrying a mysterious bag.

4. Using the passive voice
The formula for the passive voice is
Be
Subject Are/am/is/was/were Verb 3 by Object
Be/been/being

Example
• The city was bombed by The US Air Force
• Tomorrow, these documentary films will be televised by the director, James Cameron.
• The hotel was investigated by CIA and FBI.

5. Using the time conjunctions

6. Using the direct speech and indirect speech
 Direct speech
Words spoken directly by the speaker and heard directly by partner of speaking.
Example
• My Tjahjo said, “The cabinet of Joko Widodo needs a reshuffle”

 Indirect speech
The word is rephrased by someone else, in this case it is rewritten by the reporter.
Example
• My Tjahjo said that The cabinet of Joko widodo needed a reshuffle

7. Using the action verbs


For example : closed, came, attact, observed, investigated, and others

Newsworhty events :
Singaporean powers have confined five fisherman from bagan siapiapi
riau, in the offshore of singapore, march 12, 2020

Background of events :
'Five customary fisherman from bagan siapiapi were caught and kept in
tanjung bandan, singapore." Executive of the kepri office of the
indonesian traditional fisherman association (KNTI) Sirajudin Wachid
said as cited by Antara. The captures were made as the anglers were
returning home from a two-day trip.
