Survey Camp Report 2
Survey and Survey Camp

Survey:
• Surveying is the science and art of determining the relative
positions of points on, above, or beneath the earth’s surface.

• Done by means of measurements of distances, direction and

elevation

Survey Camp:
• Engineering Training Course

• Students gets an opportunity to consolidate and update their

practical and theoretical knowledge in engineering surveying
under actual field conditions

Survey Camp Report 3

Objective of Survey Camp

• To become familiar with the problems that may arise during the fieldworks.

• To become familiar with proper handling of instruments and their functions.

• To become familiar with the spirit and importance of teamwork as surveying is not a
single person work.
• To complete the given project in scheduled time and thus know the value of time.
• To collect the data in the field in systematic manner.
• To compute and manipulate the observed data in the required accuracy and present
in the diagrammatic and tabular form.

Survey Camp Report 4

Salient Features of Survey Camp

Duration:
12 days ( 26th Ashoj to 7th Kartik)

Location:
Region : Bagmati
District : Bhaktapur
Province: 3

Sites:
For Topographical Survey and Road Alignment : Nepal Electricity Authority(NEA)
For Bride Site Survey : Roshi Khola, Panauti

Working hours:
6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Survey Camp Report 5

Topographical Survey

• Determination of position of natural and artificial features of the

locality by the means of conventional signs up on a topographical
map.

• Three dimensional; graphical representation of position of the

earth’s surface.

Objectives:

• Preparation of topographic map of the given area with horizontal

and vertical control within required accuracy.

• Calculations and Diagrammatic representation of the area with

the help of co-ordinates in the paper.

Survey Camp Report 6

Instrument used in Topographical survey

• Total Station
• Reflector
• Levelling Staffs
• Ranging Rods
• Measuring Tapes 30m and 50m
• Levelling Instruments
• Plumb bob
• Compass
• Plane table
• Nails & Pegs
• Paints
• Hammer

Survey Camp Report 7

Methodology

1. Reconnaissance Survey (Reiki Survey)

2. Selection and making of the major and minor traverse
• 13 major traverse maintaining leg ratio of 1:2
• 2 minor traverse & 3 link traverse maintaining leg ratio of 1:3
3. Measurement of the angles and length of the major and minor traverse
4. Orientation Check
• Cross check of orientation of traverse was done using Plane
table
• Co-ordinate check was done using Total Station.
5. Two peg test
• To check permanent adjustment of level.
• Precision was within permissible limit(1:10000).

Survey Camp Report 8

6. Levelling of traverse stations
• Fly levelling was carried out.
 RL of BM : 1415m
 RL of TBM : 1412.792m
7. Detailing
• It is done to trace the position of object in field on the map using
horizontal and vertical measurements.
• Carried out using Total Station by measuring length & bearing
of line of sight of object from pre-determined stations.
8. Contouring
• Data from Total Station were used to prepare topographic map.
• All the necessary point were plotted in Grid Sheet & a
topographic map was prepared in the scale of 1:500.

Bridge Site Survey

Objectives:
• To give the preliminary knowledge on selection
and planning of possible bridge site .

• To prepare the topographical map of the river

site with longitudinal section and cross section.

Survey Camp Report 14

Instrument used in Bridge Site Survey

• Total station
• Staff
• Abney Level
• Prism and Poles
• Tapes (30m, 50m)
• Compass with tripod
• Pegs & Hammer
• Enamel paint or marker

Survey Camp Report 15

Methodology

1. Reconnaissance/Site Selection
2. Triangulation Survey
 Triangulation points were established & well conditioned triangles
were performed.
 Measurement of distance of Base line in accuracy of 1:2000.
 Measurement of angles of triangles on two sets of horizontal
circle readings by Total Station.
 The bearing of the bridge axis was measured using compass.
3. Levelling
3.1 Fly Levelling
 Fly levelling was conducted to transfer the RL from given
BM to triangular stations.
3.2 Reciprocal Levelling
 Reciprocal levelling was done to transfer level from one back
to another.

Survey Camp Report 16

4. Longitudinal Sectioning
 The readings were taken at different points along the center
line of river up to 150 meters upstream & 75m downstream
from the control points .

5. Cross Sectioning
 At every 20m chainage, the readings were taken
perpendicular to the center line of river for cross sectioning.

6. Detailing
 Detailing was done with the help of Total station. The
important details of the sites were taken.

7. Computing and Plotting

 Calculations, adjustments of errors & plotting of
topographical map.
