Hair Care/Shampooing
Definition of Hair Care

Cleaning of hair with shampoo or soap to remove dirt, oil and


odor on scalp and hair for a helpless patient in bed is called
hair care.

Or

Hair care is an overall term for hygiene and cosmetology


involving the hair which grows from the human scalp and to a
lesser extent facial, pubic and other body hair.
Purposes of Hair Care

 To keep hair clean and healthy.


 To promote growth of hair.
 To prevent loss of hair.
 To prevent itching and infection.
 To prevent accumulation of dirt, dandruff and oil.
 To prevent tangles.
 To stimulate circulation.
 To clean hair after pediculosis treatment.
 To enhance personal appearance and self-esteem.
Purposes of Hair Care

 To observe the scalp.


 To provide a sense of well-being.

Contraindications

 Head and neck injuries


 Spinal cord injuries
 Surgeries on back and neck.
Procedure of Hair care /Shampooing

A. Articles
A tray Containing-
 Bath Towel-2
 Washcloth or face towel
 Mackintosh-2
 Non-absorbent cotton balls
 Bath blanket/Sheet
 Oil (Optional)
 Shampoo/ Liquid soap

 Hair comb
 Kidney tray
 Basin
 Bucket
 Mug
 Jugs-2
 Low stool
 Clean linen
 Newspaper

B. Procedure
 Check the physician order for specific precaution if any
for movement and positioning of the patient.
 Assess the general condition of the patient ,the scalp
hair and need for shampoo.
 Check the patient preference for soap/shampoo.
 Explain procedure to the patient
 Adjust the bed for comfortable height.
 Close windows and put off the fan.
 Pull the curtains.
Procedure of Hair care /Shampooing

 Fan fold the top linen to the foot-end of the bed living a sheet or
bath blanket over the patient.
 Make a through with the mackintosh or use a Kelly’s pad if
available.
 Unless contraindicated, move the patients head to the edge of the
bed ,position the patient diagonally with head positioned trough.
 Place pillow under the shoulder so that the head is slightly titled
backwards.
 Protect the pillow and bed with a mackintosh and towel.
 Place the bucket on a low stool close to the side of bed.
 Plug the ears with non-absorbent cotton balls.

 Place a wash cloth or a towel over the eyes.


 Wash hands
 Loosen and remove tangles
 Mix cold and hot water and test the temperature with the back
of hand.
 Start cleaning at hairline and working towards the back of the
head symmetrically using shampoo.
 Rub shampoo and message the scalp well.
 Rinse thoroughly with water.
 Instruct patient to inform nurses if any discomfort or pain
occur.
 Dry Hair with second towel.
