    Rizal and his companion Viola began their grand tour of Europe in May 1887 in Berlin, Germany. They traveled through several cities in Germany such as Dresden, Leitmeritz where Rizal met with scholar Blumentritt, and Prague. In Vienna, Austria they met with several Austrian scholars. Their travels then took them along the Danube River to Lintz and onto destinations in Switzerland and Italy before parting ways, with Viola going to Barcelona and Rizal continuing on to Italy, where he visited several famous cities.
