WHY WASN’T ROSALIND FRANKLIN
AWARDED WITH THE NOBEL PRIZE

It is because she had died of ovarian cancer four years earlier and the Nobel
committee does not consider posthumous candidacies.
Besides, the Nobel rules stated that each prize may be shared by no more than 3
people.
And also, the nobel committee favours those who initiated the research,
Maurice Wilkins would be the preferred candidate, since his lab’s investigation
into the structure of DNA has begun well before Franklin arrived from Paris.
IS UNDERSATNDING THE STRUCTURE OF DNA AND IT IS
FORMED IMPORTANT? WHY?

Yes. By understanding how the DNA is formed, we get to know know how it is replicated,
translated and transcribed. And by knowing how DNA replicates, we can know how it is formed.
Both of these concepts go hand in hand, allowing us to further identify errors in transcription, or
how coding for proteins work. Allowing us to understand how and why hereditary disease occur. It
is the fundamental determinant of how the body functions and the disease process. By
understanding the structure and function of DNA, we can determine an individual’s genetic
susceptibility to specific diseases, diagnose genetic disorders and formulate new drugs.
Aside from its medical uses, the fact that DNA is unique to each individual makes it a vital
forensic tool identifying criminals, the remains of a missing person, and determining the biological
parent of a child. Within agriculture DNA is also used to help improve animal livestock and plants.

WILL THE MODEL WORK IF RIBOSE IS USED
INSTEAD OF DEOXYRIBOSE? WHY?

No. Ribose has an extra oxygen atom. This will make a “too close van der
Waals contact”. Which will cause the model to become unstable.
HOW DOES THE DNA STRUCTURE PROPOSED BY
LINUS PAULING AND ROBERT COREY LOOK
LIKE?

IN YOUR OPINION, IS THERE ANY NOTICEABLE WEAKNESS
IN THE WATSON AND CRICK’S PAPER?

● If we look at today's scientific standards, this paper lacks statical analysis

of their findings, as well as the general structure. There is no p-value, their
background research is mostly criticizing of previous work by other
scientists.
● p-value : the probability of obtaining a result at least as extreme as the one
that was actually observed in the biological or clinical experiment or
epidemiological study, given that the null hypothesis is true.
