EQUATIONS OF MOTION
CONVERTING KM/HR TO M/S
EXAMPLE – Convert 36km/hr to m/s.
STEP 1
MULTIPLY BY 1,000
36×1000=36,000
STEP 2
DIVIDE BY 3,600
36,000÷3,600= 10 m/s
ACTIVITY
Convert the following to m/s.

1. 18 km/hr

2. 72 km/hr
ANSWER TO QUESTION 1
CONVERT 18km/hr to m/s.
STEP 1
MULTIPLY BY 1,000
18×1000=18,000
STEP 2
DIVIDE BY 3,600
18,000÷3,600= 5 m/s
ANSWER TO QUESTION 2
CONVERT 18km/hr to m/s.
STEP 1
MULTIPLY BY 1,000
72×1000=72,000
STEP 2
DIVIDE BY 3,600
72,000÷3,600= 20 m/s

QUESTION 1

If a car can accelerate uniformly at 2.5 m/and starts from a velocity of 36km/hr. Find its velocity

after 8 seconds.

QUESTIONS
QUESTION 2

A car accelerates uniformly from rest to 30m/s within 20s . It then travels with a constant velocity for 2
minutes. Afterwards, the car deaccelerates uniformly which caused it to be at rest within 10 seconds.

1. Sketch a graph of Velocity(m/s) vs Time(s)

2. Find the acceleration of the car during the first 20 seconds

3. Find the total distance travelled by the car

4. Find the deacceleration of the car during the last 10 seconds.

MOTION UNDER GRAVITY
(FREE- FALL)
Objects moving upwards or downwards freely within a gravitational field possess their own

acceleration. This acceleration is the same as the acceleration due to gravity( 10 m/s). We can

therefore replace a with g when using the four equations of motion.

Question 1

A geologist wants to determine the depth of a hole in a cave. The geologist drops a stone in the
hole and listens for when the stone reached the bottom of the hole. It takes the geologist five
minutes to hear a sound.

Calculate the depth of the hole.

Question 2

A tennis ball is thrown vertically upward with an initial velocity of 32m/s.

1. The time taken for the tennis ball to reach its maximum height.

2. The maximum height attained.

3. The time taken to return to starting point
